I have a 7dmII and the canon 100-400 II
I take mainly college lacrosse photos. I need a second lens for tailgate and post game pics. Something less intrusive and more wide angle I guess.
Would like to only stick to the 100-400 and one other lens.
Any suggestions would be great.

24-105 for L. I got mine from Canon as a refurb for less than $900.

If you want wide angle to short telephoto there is the Canon EFs 15-85 mm. Very good build, and very sharp. It's also smaller and lighter than the Canon 24-105L. The main issue I have with the 24-105 on a crop sensor body is that it doesn't go very wide. The 15-85 will give you significantly wider results.

How about the 18-135mm. I know it is an S lens, but until I went mirrorless it was one of my frequently used lenses.

Canon's EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM is currently available (refurbished) at $521.09. My copy of that lens has been in use for nearly five years; it is nearly always on one or another of the crop sensor cameras. It is an older design (2006, I believe), so the stabilization is of an earlier generation, but with its wide, fast max aperture and reliable focusing capability, as a wide angle to standard zoom it still offers a lot of utility on the cameras that can use EF-S lenses.

Your best, most flexible option is the EFS 18-135. If you're keeping an eye toward FF compatibility, consider the 17-40L for cost or the 16-35 f/4L IS for IS-support.

If you want unobtrusive have you thought of canons pancake lens either 24 or 40mm. Both weigh nothing and great street photography lenes. Got them last Christmas for $125 /99 on sale.. I also have the kit 18-135 or 70-250 kit

There are several choices depending on budget and whether or not an EF-S lens and whether or not other manufacturers.
If you are willing to get an EF-S lens then:
Canon 18-135 (USM is the best of the 3 types, $600 new)

Tamron 18-400 ($600 new)

Sigma 18-200 ($400 new)

I used to keep three lenses: Tamron 10-24, Canon 24-105L and Canon 100-400L - one the camera and two in the shoulder bag when I was using my 7DII. My daughter fell in love with the 10-24 so I gave it to her. My 14 mm Ultra Wide goes in the bag now. And they all are FF lenses so it doesn't matter which body I am carrying.

The focal length you need depends upon the subject size and distance. The required aperture will depend upon the desired depth of field and subject lighting.

When IQ counts (birds,grand kids ball games)I have on the 100_400LII otherwise I enjoy useing the Tamron 18-400mm for travel,hiking and walk around and has decent IQ especially in good light
