I have woodpeckers that appreciate my efforts, but they must compete with the red winged blackbirds and other assorted black birds. Also, if I dont buy the no melt kind, the rain does it in. In my part of TN, it seems to rain 4 days out of seven these days.

Google "squirrel buster" its a weight sensitive bird feeder that keeps away squirrels and doves, pricey but works great.

Yes, I have a squirrel baffle on my feeder pole. I got it at wild birds unlimited.

Hello, I'm new to this site. I live in Colorado.
We have several feeders around the house and see everything from finches to blue jays. We used to have squirrel issues until we tried hot seed and suet. It contains chilli pepper oils. Birds love it but its too hot for squirrels. Birds can't taste the heat but all mammals (squirrels) can. But since we love watching the squirrels too, we put out cob corn for them. They can be hilarious to watch.

I hang my suet feeder on a piece of picture hanging wire that is strung between 2 4x4 post. I also hang my seed feeders from it. No squirrels. But if I leave them outside the raccoons climb the post and shake the wire until the suet feeder eventually slides within reach. It's funny as hell to watch. I could make the hooks not slide but I bring them in unless I want a show. Lol

I have a family of Pilated woodpeckers that visit twice a day. That appears to be a male attention your suet. The females don't have red along their jowl line and their red comb on top only goes about half way. The males comb goes all the way forward.

so ... the squirrels can slide down a wire to the feeder but they can't "walk" the wire? Interesting.

I hung up a bird feeder from my tree yesterday afternoon for the same reason that you did. Throughout the day today i periodically looked out the window to see if any birds found it. I didn't see a single bird! Later this afternoon I went out back to mow the lawn. I checked on the bird feeder. Over three quarters of the bird seed was gone. I still didn't see a single bird.

That must have been the 'Lesser-Spotted Stealth' birds.

Yes they can't walk the wire. It is the strong single strand picture hanging wire. I'll include a pic of the package. I live right next to 600 acres of wildlife reserve so there is no shortage of suspects. Lol. I still don't understand how the raccoons learned to shake the wire to get the suet. They will take the suet feeder off the hook and take it into the edge of the woods to eat. Sometimes I forget to bring it in and usually the first night I'm OK. Usually. The second night is guaranteed gone. Lol.
