The Df was designed and marketed as a collector camera for nostalgic Nikon users. As a collector camera its resale value will run considerably higher than a technologically superior camera that also had more copies manufactured. Personally I'm a Canon and Nikon user and I never saw the appeal of the Df. I understand it, just never bought into it.

The Df also gives new life to older pre-Ai NIKKOR lenses. It does seem there would be a correlation between saving older lenses and nostalgia which Nikon is tapping into. There is another purpose other than collecting: actually using pre-Ai lenses on a FF body. Whether any of the older lenses are worth spending much on is another question. That might be where nostalgia might overrule the bottom line. I suffer from fixer deprivation as much as anyone, but if my older lenses fared poorly on a rented Df compared with a D610 and newer lenses, I would save my memories and my old lenses for the film bodies and move on. I find the Df rather unattractive, personally. Now take the F with a Photomic finder and 50/1.4, now that's a thing of beauty, but it usually stays on the shelf.

The only thing that determines the price of anything, and I mean anything, is what someone is willing to pay for it.

wingclui44 I officially passed the Torch, Nikkormat to my 14 year old Grandson. My Current Nikons include an F2, an S2 and the Df. Also a few D cameras.

Besides of the Nikon F and Nikkormat, I have the D200, a few digi cam. under the name of Panasonic and Olympus, and a full line of lenses. I will too pass them to my daughter (She's a Nikon user too) and my grands (5 & 7 yrs old, may be too young to begin with or they may not have interesting on photography).

Who are you to declare the 610 an “entry level” camera. Please support your assertion.

The D610 is at the bottom of Nikon’s FX cameras.

In what sense? It certainly has more to offer than my D700.

The Df has a D4 processor and sensor, it is also the only camera that Nikon has that is hand assembled from machined parts in house in Japan. It is a work of art but it also one of the better camera's that Nikon has produced! I purchased mine a few months after they came out and it is still a joy to use. I do get tired of people making statements about a camera that they have never used let alone ever held in their hand.
Nikon's D5 flagship sells for over 6500.00 and it only has 20 mp.

Love your piper..... I lived in Cincinnati and took my flight training at Waynesville airport roughly half way between Cinci and Dayton. did my first 20 hours in one of their four Piper J3 Cubs on a 1600 foot grass strip, No Avionics (radios, only handhelds) They also had a couple of soaring gliders and a largish jump club. There was an occasional DC3 that came over from lower Indianna and the sky was full of general aviators, jumpers and a few warbirds buzzin the field.

Played havoc on the first tee of the golf could across from the routine takeoff end of the strip.

Would love to visit their again, if it's still in operation.

The DF is still selling new at B&H For $2800. It’s a very unique camera a little bit cumbersome to use. But with an exceptional dynamic range.

Same price I paid for it over 6 years ago. The point is that Nikon didn't expect to sell a lot of the Df but they know whoever wants one would be willing to pay the price. It's about the same price new now as the D850 and Z7.

I learned about Supply and Demand in my class in Economics and in subsequent Economics classes. Demand by the creation of higher offering prices can affect Supply. Oversupply suppresses Demand through lowering of selling prices by those who must sell the item for whatever reason they may have.

that hardly qualifies it as an entry level camera along the lines of the d3200 or whatever it was. I think you're talking through your hat. By the way, I do not shoot with a D610 in case you're thinking I'm just defending my own stuff.

I disagree that the 610 is “entry level”. It’s an excellent camera technologically superior to the DF. The DF is cool looking, but I’d go for the 610 features and save myself 800 smackeroos.

D610:
6 FPS, 24 MP, ISO 6-6400 exp to 25,600, DUAL card slots, 39 AF points with 9 cross type, Wireless flash control, 1080 30p Video.

Df:
5.5 FPS, 16 MP, 39 AF points with 9 cross type, SINGLE card slot, NO video.

Df lacking dual card slots definitely per the UHH consensus puts this camera in the rank amateur category, no REAL pro would dream of getting caught with a single card slot. 16 MP has less IQ than the D610. And to top it all off the Df lacks any video capability thus these lack of features putting it far below the scale of cameras from bottom to top as compared to the D610.
Yes, you might like the looks, but performance under the hood is lacking.

Some people just prefer dials over buttons. And some people like the idea that they can use older lenses with the Df.

With Nikon, which is not the same with Canon, a Nikon lens owner can use any of their new and old lenses on any of the Nikon digital cameras. Not speaking about the latest Mirrorless type, just DSLR models. With Canon you can not just use your old lenses, nor can you use full frame sensor lenses on any cropped sensor body.

So the statement of being able to use older lenses with that body, is redundant since all Nikon bodies will fit all old and new lenses, again, not speaking about the latest mirrorless bodies here. To me the ability to use any Nikon lens on an DSLR body is a definite plus over the Canon brand system.
