What determines used camera values - in particular a Nikon Df vs a Nikon D610

I can't quite figure out the used Nikon camera market. I see the Nikon Df (originally a $2800 body new) and these are currently selling used at about $1200 - $1300. Then I see a good used Nikon D610 selling for about $450. The D610 has a 24mp FF sensor and the Df has a 16mp FF sensor. Can anyone explain the price difference?

Curb appeal, little to do with technology. The Df sensor is (was) highly rated for low-light, but technology has moved on from those days. The retro look remains unique in the market.

Although technically, the D610 seems superior, the DF is not far behind and even betters the D610 on many areas such as ISO & number of shots per charge. More to that, its construction and controls are more tactile & visually functional.
Also, some people would actually buy it just for fashion & pride rather than what they they can do, and its form is really more nostalgic if not aesthetic making it a jewelry, not just a tool.

One of my students came to see one day. He brought with him an ad for a pretty high-end computer and his question was, "is this adequate to run photo processing software." I looked over the specs and answered yes, but in fact it's a bit overkill. You could do as well and spend substantially less if you avoided the "hot brand" and glitz that comes with it. Is there a reason you've singled out this system? He sighed and said, "my wife says this one goes with the curtains." I said, "you poor bleep bleep."

The Df has a D4 processor and sensor, it is also the only camera that Nikon has that is hand assembled from machined parts in house in Japan. It is a work of art but it also one of the better camera's that Nikon has produced! I purchased mine a few months after they came out and it is still a joy to use. I do get tired of people making statements about a camera that they have never used let alone ever held in their hand.
Nikon's D5 flagship sells for over 6500.00 and it only has 20 mp.

The Df was designed and marketed as a collector camera for nostalgic Nikon users. As a collector camera its resale value will run considerably higher than a technologically superior camera that also had more copies manufactured. Personally I'm a Canon and Nikon user and I never saw the appeal of the Df. I understand it, just never bought into it.

Some people just prefer dials over buttons. And some people like the idea that they can use older lenses with the Df.

There’s little comparison between the two. The D610 is an entry level camera, the Df is built for professional use like the F series film cameras.

It’s kinda odd to be puzzling about the used camera pricing. When both were new the Df cost almost double the 610.

Consider the limitations of an M-Leica vs any mid level modern camera. Neither the Df nor the M ever set any sales volume records, nor were they ever intended to do so. The Df was intended to sell rather modestly and the M is intended to barely sell at all. Go figger.

Fuji has a nostalgia model as well in the X-Pro series and it’s certainly not selling in great quantity either ... although as a modern camera under the skin it does see regular updates (version III lately).

The D610 new was about half the price of the Df new.

A number of good insights and different viewpoints on the same topic. One reason why I like UHH is being able to get a number of ideas from a number of experienced photographers. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply.

Any thing is only WORTH what someone is willing to pay for it.
Go to ebay, there look up your equipment in question, then, down the left side, find "sold items", check that and ebay will show you what the equipment actually sold for. That will give you a good idea of the value of that piece of equipment. Below is what I found the Df's selling for.

It's like predicting the weather - too many variables. When a new camera is introduced at $2,500, you can be sure the price will drop to $2,000 before long, although it's still the same camera. The selling price doesn't have too much to do with the used price.

A larger influence on the used price is the appeal and reputation of the camera. The D600 was a marketing disaster for Nikon, so they introduced a "brand new, totally different model," which was basically the same camera with a different name. This didn't help sales - new or used - of the D610. As with everything else, if a used item is priced too high, it won't sell. People have to be willing to pay the price for a used item.
