For me, backing up is no issue. Since I'm using CrashPlan, that backs up everything without my having to do anything. Using an automated system is safer than having to remember when was the last time I backed everything up. With this system the answer is "within the last 10 minutes".

The LR catalog has its own backup, which I have set to once a week. It backs up at shut down. If I have a catalog I rarely open, it will back up the next time it gets shut down so I don't have a pile of backups for that catalog when nothing has changed.

And the only times I even look at the catalog backups are (1) if the catalog has a problem (rare) or (2) every 6 months or so I go in and delete all the backups except the most recent ones. I have never needed a backup file more than a couple weeks old, but if I ever did, it will be on the CrashPlan backup.

This is my system. If yours works for you, who am I to complain about it?

Thanks for your reply. The interesting thing I've found with my short time on UHH is everyone seems so dang opinionated and absolutely not willing to try anything that's written about various subjects.

Everybody's situation is different, but I love to try new things and am always open to new/changing technology.

I remember 20yrs that EVERYONE fought and talked down about shooting in RAW. Well, today, most people only shoot in RAW and if they're still interested in .jpg's, they'll shoot both! I'm amazed that people still argue about shooting in only .jpg, as you basically hand over control of your file correction to the computer in your camera! LOL

Anyway, good luck with your LR/PS/Backup journey.

Phil

That's not limited to UHH. Not even limited to photography or online forums. It's life, now.

You may be setting yourself up for heartache. Thumb drives are very fragile and small. Both features make them candidates for TEMPORARY storage only. If your desire is for permanent storage then external hard drives are the answer. At this time iPhones do not communicate with any drivers unless both devices are connected by computer.

Actually now you can purchase Pin/Thumb drives as big as two terabyte and they made of Aluminum so not too fragile as you claim, and are very reasonable priced, now as for loosing I keep all of mine in a zip up case with a description of what’s on them and that I purchased at Best Buy. Of course I like order in the way I do things.

Have you actually tried to store 2TBytes on one of them?

No but I have read few of the reviews they are not quite two terabytes just like any other device. But like any external device I use folders to store photos, files and so on. I’ve ordered two of these drives.

When you get one, try to load it up. (If you don't have 2 TBytes to test it with you can always create a Temp folder that contains a lot of folders [e.g. temp1,temp2...) that you can fill with whatever you have. You can always erase extraneous stuff later). But I have heard on line that the 2TByte number is a scam and they won't really store more than a couple hundred Gig. Let us know how it performs.

Not being a fan of thumb drives (too small and easily lost) I don't feel like spending my own money just to test it. I'm happy with my external hard drives which I have observed hold what they advertise. But if someone has bought one, (s)he should know how much it will actually hold before depending on it.

If I'm wrong, my apologies for spreading misinformation.

It’s great but it only works with Apple products.

Sandisk makes a thumb drive that is a usb connector on one end and an android or apple phone connector on the other. Not a huge storage capacity but can move photos from phone and computer back and forth easily

I've got one that's 128GB. There are probably larger ones available.

If there exists a USB stick (thumb drive) that will plug into a phone or camera, please let me know!
Yes, and with respect to iDevices, it has been around a few years now. It’s the SanDisk iXpand flash drive available in 32, 64, 128, and 256 GB sizes. It has both a male USB-A plug and a male Lightning plug and can hold photo, audio, and video files as well as pdfs.

Mine has a male USB 3.0 connector on one end and a male micro USB connector on the other. I can read and write files using my android smart phone, my Kindle Fire HD tablet, and my computer.
