Thanks to all for giving me some input into the fisheye lens questions. Lots of things to consider. Everyone stay safe and stay healthy in this time of uncertainty

AF is not needed, in fact I just back it off slightly from infinity and just leave it there.
For a not commonly used lens I did not want to make a huge investment in a fisheye. This one does it all for a price that you do not feel bad if you do not use it all the time, but is there when your vision says it is needed.
Have fun.
Thanks for heads up on this lens. Just went to B&H and put one in my cart. I liked the one with removable hood. Looks like I'll have to lean forward to my feet don't caught in the shot.

Nikon does not make a full fish-eye (round image) for any of their DX Camera. The image recorded on the DX sensor is 180-degrees, corner to opposite corner. The 8 to 15mm lens will not produce a round image on a DX sensor.
I am a Nikon Fish-eye lens owner and user for over fifty years,

Yes, it takes a bit of practice.
I took this of the house that the owner inspired the Gone With The Wind story using that fisheye lens.
Even my 10mm was too long for the extremely tight space I was in so the fisheye came out and saved the day.
I did a bit of adjusting in PSE 14 to remove some of the curve and this is where a fisheye can be invaluable. Not just for exotic curves and special effects but in situations like this. I am sure some PS wizards can do more but I am happy with the photo and would never have gotten it without that fisheye.
Have fun and do not be afraid to explore, there is no right or wrong.
What are you questioning?

Fisheye lens does NOT necessarily produce a round image.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisheye_lensCanon I know produced/s "Fisheye" lenses that make a round image and fill the frame.
The distortion is the main feature of what is a fisheye not a round image as you said.

That’s why I differentiated betweeen a FULL fisheye and a SEMI fisheye.

There is no distinction, fisheye is fisheye.
Look at the definition.

Pedantic much? I’ve bought lenses that used those descriptions. Also “180°”, “circular”, I think the meaning is clear.
I use the 8-15mm f3.5-4.5 on my D500 and it works great.
Only limitation is that you can't zoom out past about 10mm (the point at which it becomes a circular image on your D850).

But with a full fisheye DX lens you would still be limited to a circle of coverage that’s designed to fit inside a DX sensor.
I have a 10-17 Tokina DX (have used on all my DX cameras since I got it 11 years ago) and a Sigma 15mm Fisheye I got for my FF bodies. The Sigma, while not super wide, gives me a great center and the outside flare I like...same with that Tokina, where the zoom makes it that much more versatile...you're right in that the effect is diluted in the DX mode, but, interestingly, I like the reduced effect alot. I think the Tokina wins for me as that's my go to when "in the mood." I guess my point is, it's what the photog likes!

Yes, I find the cropped effect usually more useful than the full circle, I just wanted to point out that with the FX lens on a DX camera they couldn’t get the full circle if that was their intent.

I have the Rokinon AE 8mm f/3.5 aspherical Fish Eye (same as Samyang I believe). Very reasonable price, a DX lens, good IQ. Be sure to get the one with the chip. Minimal price difference. I like it a lot.
Very good lens and the price is right.
