Looking to buy a fisheye lens for one of my cameras. I have and use the D500 and D850 Currently my widest lens are 12-24mm f4 G DX for the D500 and 17-35mm f2.8D for the D850. . Both these lens are just wide angle

I want a fisheye lens for creative or hemispherical effect. All my lens are Nikkors but might consider others.
I do carry both bodies at times, with longer FX lens on the D500 for extra reach with my 24-120 f4, 70-200 f2.8 or the 300mm f2.8

The two fisheye lens I am considering are the Nikkor 10.5mm f2.8 for the D500 or the 8-15mm f3.5-4.5 for the D850.. Both lens should match up and be fully functional on either body. Not knowing which body I will have at any given time when I want to use the fisheye lens is the problem. The 8-15mm from what I have read is a superior lens, but I probably only use it at the low end (8mm) for the effect. The 10.5 f2.8 DX is a prime. If I were to put this 10.5mm lens on the D850 the camera would automatically take the image in the DX format. Would I still have the effect. The 8-15mm FX lens on the D500 DX would give me a FOV of 12-22. and wouldn't I loose the hemispherical effect. Seems to me that the 10.5mm DX lens might be better for me. What am I missing where am I wrong? What say the Hog community

Yes, if you’re looking for a “full” fisheye effect then the FX lens on the D500 won’t give you that, just a semi fisheye.

Hold off buying. They are bring out a fisheye lens of 183°. Yes, it will produce a round image and look very slightly behind the camera.

FX or DX doesn't matter. The 10mm dx lens will also have an effective field of view of 15 mm on the D500. It's the sensor that matters.

As far as the fisheye effect it does matter. The circle of coverage for an FX fisheye lens makes a full circle within the sensor frame. On a DX the circle is bigger than the sensor. You’ll get some curvature but not the full fisheye effect. Focal length has nothing to do with it.

I have 4.5mm fisheye for my M4/3 that’s 210°. I have to be careful to keep my hands out of the frame.

Sounds like a ready neat lense to use. It is almost easier to use a selfie stick to keep one's hands and feet out of the picture.

I’ve had fun with it. It was really fun shooting some video of some friends in a band playing live. Here a a couple of examples. One the full effect, fingers and all and the other a cropped “group selfie” done using the flippable LCD.

OK So I understand a FX fisheye lens filling the sensor (full circle) which is what I am looking for on a fx camera. And using the FX fisheye on a DX camera the circle would be bigger than the sensor so not as much curvature.
Now a DX 10.5mm fisheye, that lens I would assume would fill full circle on a DX sensor. But if I were to use the DX lens on a FX camera, the camera automatically sees that I have a DX lens mounted and only fills the sensor to that of a DX sensor wouldn't it

Pretty much. Even if it was a lens that the FX camera didn’t recognize as a DX, being a fisheye the entire circle of coverage fits in the DX sensor, so it would only cover the same amount of space on the FX sensor, leaving a lot of black space.

IMO unless you have a specific need save your money. 99% of those who own one end up not using it and wish they never bought it.

I actually really like a fisheye for a unique look. To me, they offer a way to bring a different perspective to the viewer. I have had fun with them in stadiums and even in portraits. Practice with it and learn how the horizon line is key.

The 10.5 f2.8 DX prime is a full frame fisheye. It will not give you the full circular image you are looking for. The 8-15 FX lens will give the full circular image on the D850 at 8mm and full frame at 15mm. While more expensive, it gives more options in framing your picture.

If you want a true fisheye lens, a circular image, here you go.

I have the Rokinon AE 8mm f/3.5 aspherical Fish Eye (same as Samyang I believe). Very reasonable price, a DX lens, good IQ. Be sure to get the one with the chip. Minimal price difference. I like it a lot.
