It's amazing how a simple question can degenerate into several off topic subjects.

Perhaps I am wrong but I think the shutter release button on the D5100 always goes down when you press it. It may not take a picture if it's malfunction but I think the lock doesn't keep it from going down.

You are correct. There is no lock on the shutter release for D3100, D5100, D7100, etc. Check the mirror. If it is stuck up, the shutter release will not move.

Look again. 'She' corrected the typo and said so a few minutes after the original post. Originally it said D1500.

Really if the mirror stuck up the shutter release won't move? I do not think there is anything that keeps the shutter release button from going down. Sure if the mirror stuck up it won't release the shutter but it still goes down.

Try using a stiff tooth brush before using a needle. That'll ruin things and leave scratch marks where a tooth brush will dislodge any obstruction without further damage. If nothing else works, send it to me and I'll fix it for you.

THAT should (!) be the end of the thread. Unless acoarst there’s one more post in which Ellen rePorts that the tooThbrsh/needlE/bit of force has already succeeded !

I’d first suspect that enough crud might have accumulated around the button to inhibit its movement.

BUT, before doing anything, plan to be very careful and cautious and try less drastic methods.

However, DO NOT use WD40 original penetrating spray! It will coagulate, spread, travel and attract more crud. WD40 was designed as a solvent/cleaner. It's great cleaning dirt and getting gunk out. But it also leaves a residue behind which over time has a tendency to gum things up.

I’d first try spraying around the button with a can of compressed air, and when that doesn’t work, dampen a cotton swab or a soft toothbrush with just a little alcohol and carefully , work it around the button, trying it as you go. Other solvents might ruin the body.

Once cleared, WD40 makes a “Specialist® High Performance Silicone Lubricant” that could be worked around the button with another cotton swab or the soft toothbrush after it has dried thoroughly.

My 7100 will not allow you to shoot if you are way out of focus. I did not realize that until just they other day when taking some shots around the house.

That depends on how you have it set. You can set the autofocus to only shoot when focus is achieved, or to shoot whether it's in focus or not.

Thought no one would DARE to mention a SPRAY ... but since it has happened:

The safest, maybe the only safe one, for electronic gear is Contact Cleaner (generic term). Generally used for cleaning audio controls when they get to sounding staticky and scratchy as one turns the knobs. The generic term will get you an online source. Cost about $10.

Actually WD40 was designed as a Water Dispersant.
It is said that it took the inventor 40 tries to get it right.

Cute enuf ! But nowadays we use it for anything that can’t be fixed with duct tape :-/
