Neither the CDC or the WHO recommends sanitizing packages. Let's all take a breath people. Wash your hands and practice social distancing. Panicking helps no one. Be safe, not stupid.

In case that was a reference to my post, I'm not panicking. That was sarcasm.

Playing it safe! My wife takes the mail each day and opens the envelopes and tosses them in the trash then reads the contents. She does wear latex gloves for the opening exercise. I actually thing washing your hands good after doing the mail is sufficient but would never discourage anyone from doing extra.

It's hopeless. I'm going to lay down and die right now. But don't worry. Trump says we will ALL be in church on Easter sunday. Talk about clueless.

"Thoughts and prayers" seems to have worked well in the past, right?

Absolutely not and I appreciate sarcasm and am. I was responding to the general notion referenced by others that people need to sanitize boxes and packages they get in the mail or the grocery store.

Anyone have any facts on this? I have heard that the virus can survive for 10 hours on paper, cardboard etc. Only 1/2 hour on copper. So different surfaces different survival times for the virus. Then of course you see the videos of governments spraying the streets with disinfectant. To be safe I have been letting packages and mail sit for a day. Also washing after handling any parcels. Hard times that require more science and facts. Try to stay safe and distant everyone.

The latest study suggests up to 4 hrs on copper, 24 hrs on cardboard, 72 hours on plastic or stainless steel. However, environment matters. Colder and damper => longer 'life' to the virus. I read the latest study and did not find what environmental conditions they used for testing, so I would assume standard temperature (20C = 68F) and a moderate humidity.

With at least one Amazon warehouse worker testing positive for the virus, it would be smart to disinfect mail and packages. Aside from Amazon, lots of other people handle mail and packages. I'm going to use a Clorox mixture to spray and/or wipe. I have lots of latex gloves, too.

Really! Lots of latex gloves!
Great, I took three boxes to the hospital that treated me for my stroke last month, along with boxes of all types of medical supplies (masks, some surgical, Dad was a doctor but he is gone now) that were laying around unused, many sterile sealed. Thinks about what wold happen if every day citizens arrived at medical centers and dropped off all those supplies? Trust me, medical centers would be able to handle it and they will not horde, but distribute to their fellow care givers, including EMS/Firefighters.

It makes sense to just wash or sanitize your hands when you are done with the mail.

And, of course, everything you (or the mail) have touched after picking it up.

I put my mail on a small spot on a table, so it makes the process of cleaning easier.
