My car has a small cargo type hole so if I know I'm not going straight back but am gonna leave vehicle a short while I put it in there. It is concealed and cannot be seen. I hate for you.

I doubt that there is much to be done anymore short of keeping a Pit-Bull in your car with the windows down just enough that it can't get out.

Unfortunately there are States that are very soft on the street dwellers and drug abusers and property crimes are the expected results. So much so that in some cities the police will not respond and the victim is instructed to resolve it with their insurance.

Moral of the story is much like gambling at the casino. Never bet more than you are willing or can afford to lose.

Please be aware that I had a Canon 400 mm f:5.6L lens and case stolen in a "smash and grab" from my truck while parked at a walking trail in western Washington.

It's one of the "white" lenses from Canon and was in the original Canon lens case.

The serial number is: 156575

If you run across it, please call the Pierce County Sheriff at 1-253-798-4944

I appreciate this forum, and all of you photogs!

You did the right thing.

So sorry to hear this! What a punk.

For this reason I never carry my big lenses in their cases in the vehicle, they are often too hard to conceal. I always carry a large black blanket and place all gear not on me in the back of the SUV and cover with the blanket. People are generally honest but there is always going to be that one bad apple in the basket.

For information our jails and prisons are filled with one bad apple times thousands.

Bet this is a serial "smash 'n grabber". Maybe check with the police you reported it to, to see if there is a pattern in this area...

You should call Canon support as they have a stolen product list and may be able to help you recover the missing lens.

I think this is a good number to call 1-800-652-2666

In combat it's ... never leave a man behind.
In photography ... never leave equipment behind.
Whatever I take for a day out ... is never more than I feel comfortable carrying.
I hope you get it back.

Insurance? Homeowners or auto should work.

Sadly, the break was probably motivated by someone wanting easy money. I was at the Grand Coulee dam recently, and someone had written over a parking sign " the damned drugs are here' which I interpreted to mean that the locals were being plagued by cheap and debilitating drugs. So sad a commentary.

Your auto insurance might cover it.

Your car insurance won't cover but your home owners insurance would.

Just a little levity. Woman in our town was walking down the sidewalk with her dog. Car stopped next to her. Man jumped out and grabbed a bag she was carrying. It contained the dog droppings she had shoveled up. Her only regret was that she couldn't see the face of the man when he reached into the bag!

LOL. As an aside, this past weekend I picked up TP and then went to another store for other staple items. I locked the truck. Grandson looked at me like I was from Mars :)

Diaper bags are also a good choice; many of them have multiple pockets and compartments, ideal for organizing camera gear.

what a great idea and probably less expensive than a camera bag
