Last Spring I purchased a D4 for $1300. eBay purchase from a Camera store in Alabama. Was shooting American Legion Baseball with my D500, 70-200 f2.8. Very Dusty. The D4 is a tank. Love it. Was shooting HS Softball until Schools closed. The 70-200 is much more versatile on Softball field with FX camera.

Be aware that with your D300, your lenses could be DX style. If they are DX, then you will have problems using them on an FX camera. If you have been using FX lenses with it, then you're ok.

However, one key piece of info is missing in your question. As always, what are you going to be using the new camera for? Landscapes, portraits, or sports? If sports, then get the D500.

I use a D3s, a D500 and a Z6 for sports and low-light photography. I use a D750 for portraits and landscapes and all-around vacation photos. I have a wide-angle DX lens for the D500, but otherwise all my remaining lenses are FX or Z6/S

For that cheap it's likely a grey market body. Be aware that Nikon will not service it in USA.

If you can wait, the last couple of times Nikon had it's sale, the D850 was 2800 with the vertical grip new. Either way refurbished from Nikon carries a warranty. Enjoy your new camera.

The D850 is a very complex electromechanical system. Mine had to go back for warranty repair that had absolutely nothing to do with how I handled and treated it. Viewfinder masks, which as nearly as I can tell are new to the D850, would not clear to allow unobstructed framing of full format images. The fix involved replacement of circuit boards as well as parts in the viewfinder area.

I'm not sure how my repair would have been possible by anyone other than Nikon, especially under their new parts availability rules. I'm also really glad that I wasn't left footing the bill for it.

As a result of this experience, I'm pretty iffy around buying any of the newer camera models used. Any savings I might have realized would have been instantly wiped out by what looked on paper to be a $700 or so repair. My thoughts are also colored quite a bit by discussions I've read on this forum involving folks who are considering "dumping" a camera they are having problems with and buying something new or different.

I debate ( with myself ) to either get a D 750 or a D 3,,,, from KEH.

I would think also you could get a new D850 for around $2800. Nice to have one under warranty that has only been used by you! That said, the D850 is the ultimate iteration of the DSLR phase of Nikon cameras. It may do you well to hang in there a bit longer to consider their mirrorless offerings...

You need to ask yourself what you wish to shoot and what you wish to do with the images. You may find that you do not need to have the megapixels that the 850 produces and that the D500 will more than suffice. If that were to be the case, then you have saved thousands, because you will have far lower file sizes to work on with an image, in Photoshop or what ever you use, this will mean quicker working times. You will need a smaller size SD card and you will need much less Hard Drive space, again saving you money in the long run.

That 850 is a great camera but large file sizes really add up to a lot of space over time and you will need to buy more and more HDs to accommodate that, adding to the cost of the expensive price of the camera, over another equally as good (for your needs, possibly) camera of lower file size.

Sort of like thinking about a Ferrari for a new car change in your life, but if you just take little local trips on windy roads and have lots of things you want to transport in the car when on trips, then you don't really need that Ferrari. You would be perfectly happy with a different car, costing far less to purchase, service and fuel up each tank full, as well as better fuel mileage. So think about what you want to achieve and choose a camera that fills those needs and then maybe you have money left over for a new lens or other accessory.

Some guy on the Fred Miranda site has one $2300. Look at the forum for Buy and Sell.

That's a big leap from a D300 to a D850. I haven't seen anybody complain about their new D850 yet EXCEPT those who do not have high quality lenses to attach to it. If you do not own high quality, full frame glass you will need to empty your bank account some more to get a couple good lenses. That's about the only statement I feel comfortable making not knowing what subjects you want to photograph.

Suggestion would be to get it from Nikon where you could be assured of the quality of the refurbishing.

I bought a refurbished D850 from Band H and am very glad I did!
Just make sure they send all the stuff they say they will. I didn't get a battery (they sent one when I complained) or any digital cards (I had an extra, but still need the larger one).

I’m surprised no one recommended the d850!
