I have Hulu, but I really just use it for easier access to Netflix and Amazon Prime. Rarely use the other Hulu channels. Most of the ones I would be interested in are an extra subscription.

I recently went to my local Best Buy to get advice on 'cutting the chord' but got waylaid by a young woman who seduced me into switching my cable/wifi service to a two year contract for not much saving from my previous plan.

Idiot!!!!

If you only want Netflix and Amazon, check out Roku or a similar device. More $ up front vs recurring monthly $. A simple calculation will tell you how soon the up-front $ becomes less than the recurring $.

...One of the things I like about YouTube TV is that, besides watching it on my 50 smart TV, I can watch it on my laptop, tablet and smart phone. I'm currently watching "Let's Make a Deal" on the local channel 2 on my Samsung tablet as we speak. Can't do that with cable, satellite or OTA antenna.
MLB is easier to watch on my 13" Chromebook than college basketball (especially in the larger venues when cameras are farther away). But it's convenient and easy, especially if you have a rolling laptop table

Several suggestions:

One is to visit this site: https://www.cordcuttersnews.com/

I subscribe to the $6 Hulu program. I use PlayOn to record and skip the commercials. https://www.playon.tv/
(Of course, if you must watch "Live" shows, that wouldn't work for you.)

To replace your current Cable service, see my first suggestion.

I agree, Tablo is the only way to go for OTA (Over The Air) TV. And if you are in the right area, you probably would use ROKU half as much.

I only use Roku for the non-air channels, such as Amazon Prime.

Pretty sure HULU offers a 30 day free trial.

I have the basic Hulu account. Love it. There are many more things to watch besides the big TV channels. But it is nice to be able to go back and watch them if you missed an episode. They also produce their own programs like Amazon and Netflix. Plus, carry many cable programs and movies. Yes, there are commercials but, many times it breaks for one and comes back to the show. It's random and maybe 2 or 3 in an hour show. Less than normal TV. I just use one to grab another beer. Lol.

I dropped my Comcast cable package. Just kept the high speed internet for 55.00/month. Got a smart TV with a digital antenna in the window. 46 channels. Hulu and Netflix. Even with their crazy made up taxes, less than 100.00/month. And...more things to watch than a person has time for. Lol.

How about recording Hulu with a Tivo? I can't remember the last time I watched a live show - so I never see commercials.

What I meant was that if you live in an area like I do -- 82 OTA channels -- streaming is not as important. Not to say that it eliminates the ROKU unit (after all you need it to use TABLO) but it does cut down on the usage.

TIVO is kinda old technology (and quite spendy IIRC) but it is essentially no different than TABLO, EMBY, or Channels DVR, etc.

Way back when we had cable and satellite. When we were planning for a trip we looked into what expenses we could trim so to set aside funds without increasing the out of pocket. Well, then the satellite seemed reasonable @$120.00 mo, and the cable at $185.00 mo ...$305.00 a MONTH! Just to watch tv. Crazy!
So. We “Cut the cord” way before there was a term for it. Dropped the satellite and cable tv, kept the internet and increased the connection speed to 200mbs, and bought an Apple TV devise. Our monthly reduced from $305 to $81.00 mo that’s a $224.00 a month savings to apply to our trip. In 14 months we had a nice amount of “play money” for our trip. Now yes we have HuLu, and Prime, still take trips, stream local news, and even have enough to scoot off and experience a live game from time to time. 8 years ago I shuttered at the thought of dropping cable and satellite. It’s now been 7 years and have no regrets, and I’m amazed by the numbers who have taken the cord and cut it now, and shudder at the cost my friends still pay. (now the next $ magic cam when I dropped a 2.5 pack a day habit)

Not sure. Don't have Tivo. Give it a try.

I would get rid of the TV altogether, if I didn't live in a mobile home. Nothing much interests me and hasn't been on since the Superbowl. But......kinda need to know when it's time to run! Lol. I have a very accurate app from a LOCAL station but, still precious minutes behind the live weather guy.

Every once and a while there is something good on TV, but can't watch it because of other commitments. Or I get caught up in some project and forget about it. Hulu allows me to watch it at my convenience.

My Tivo costs $16.99/mo, and I can live with that. I looked at the ones you mentioned, and they don't appeal to me. Thanks, though.

And spending $204 a year for the same thing that is available at very little (if any) cost doesn't appeal to me. Different strokes... <shy grin>
