I'll answer the question posed in your title. That should cover the rest. It basically comes down to the integrity with which I approach the photographs I take.

Whenever a finger is pointed, there are three that point back. The proverbial inadvertent truth.

Whatever Walmart does, or not, has very little effect on the public view of a professional photographer (and everybody else who deem themselves as "professional"). "Professional" does have the cognitive connotation of "makes money”.

The market is a very fluid place, regardless of product provided. Anything can come by and change some parameter. To expect something based on some perception and to demand a particular response is ludicrous, at best. It never worked.

Is “professional” an added bumper sticker or is it an aptitude? When I repped, I followed the three tenets of being successful in sales. 1. Provide the best product. 2. Provide the best price. 3. Provide the best service. Nothing to do with public view.

How do you perceive your relationship to your client?

Hey dude, you gave me such a chuckle this morning. I really liked that. I also lost an additional stop of shutter speed with my 200-500mm from laughing.

Reminds me of that old saying about a boat: The 2 happiest days in the life of a boat owner are the day that he buys it and then the day that he sells it......

BOAT, break out another thousand... every time you look at it. Photographer.... well pretty much the same thing haha.

The definition of professional is, making a living from it. Skill and ability is a separate issue.

"Ain't that the truuff"...... all I wanted was a great camera to take pictures in the dark. Now I have to buy this $3,000 "accessory" to "develop" and process all of those fantastically great pictures that I am now capturing with this super-duper camera. Not to mention that 10% of my time is spent capturing them and now 90% trying to prove what I did......sigh

In the early 90's, there was a rule of thumb of $2500 regarding digital photography: " $2500 " for each line item. $2500 for a camera and lens, $2500 for the computer. Now I believe that's probably closer to $3000.

The Indiana State Fair photo competition rule is harsh: according to them, if one has ever sold anything for however much, he is a professional. I seriously doubt that many adhere to it.

I cleaned miles of ditch by shovel growing up.
Was real good at it.
Never considered myself a professional. 🤣

A person maybe the “best” photographer in the world. If people don’t know where to find you than you are not going to make money off your craft. There are many fine photographers who are starving. For me at least, being good at marketing is probably more important than being good at photography. There are many so so photographers who make a living because they know their market.

Philosophy according to Paul is probably the most accurate statement ever made on this board. Photography according to Paul shows he probably hasn't had to sell his equipment. Philosophy and photography, a combination of some very good hands and one great eye. Thanx Paul.

I have to agree with you. I would add this: If you have a habit of failing to provide the client with the results they are expecting in an honest and ethical manner, you won't have clients anymore and you'll not be able to support yourself. When you do work that keeps the client satisfied, keeps them coming back and they continue to give you the money to support yourself, welcome, you're a Pro.

All that you say is essential but the level of quality and artistry does depend on your particular market place. Dealing with people with honesty and integrity is always the same in every market place. Without that, you will be selling shoes. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
