I'm retired but when I did work I considered being a professional meant I was skilled, I got the correct results, and I got paid. To me it was as much about doing the job correctly as it was about getting paid. People get paid for shoddy work but I don't consider them professional. People do great work without getting paid and they are amateurs. I don't consider amateur to be a derogatory term. College star athletes are amateurs.

Whenever a finger is pointed, there are three that point back. The proverbial inadvertent truth.

Whatever Walmart does, or not, has very little effect on the public view of a professional photographer (and everybody else who deem themselves as "professional"). "Professional" does have the cognitive connotation of "makes money”.

The market is a very fluid place, regardless of product provided. Anything can come by and change some parameter. To expect something based on some perception and to demand a particular response is ludicrous, at best. It never worked.

Is “professional” an added bumper sticker or is it an aptitude? When I repped, I followed the three tenets of being successful in sales. 1. Provide the best product. 2. Provide the best price. 3. Provide the best service. Nothing to do with public view.

How do you perceive your relationship to your client?

How about earning a living as a Photo Journalist? A series of single images (slide show, no moving/video images please) on TV, accompanied by a relevant story, presented either during a "news hour" or, in a 30-minute or 60-minute special? I wonder if (public TV) would be interested?

Topic: Your call.

I worked for Sheldon Apsell a while ago, and his wife was the executive producer of Nova. I could pitch it to her. Of course there are more local outlets.

Thoughts?

Tom
