Over the weekend I went eagle hunting. For most of the day they were most uncooperative and remained too far away for any good shots. However I did manage this photo (and a few others). When ever an this particular osprey ventured into the "private" fishing area of this eagle he would start screaming and launch out of the trees to dive the osprey off. The two birds soared and dove after each other for sometimes 15 minutes at a time. No contact was ever made but the chase and dives were exciting to watch. This was the only shot that had both of their faces visible as their circles often left them looking away from the camera.
The image was taken with a Nikon D850 with a 600mm f4 prime lens using auto ISO,manual mode, single point group dynamic focus and was handheld. That is about an 11 pound rig to swing while chasing a pair of fast moving birds and maintain focus.

treadwl,
A wonderful capture!
That millisecond of their mutual positions at the instant of exposure was a not-to-be planned on moment that made for amazing composition!

Hey, I'd always rather be lucky than good. But my D850's 9 frames per second really helped. I struggled to keep them in the frame.

My granddaughter plays tennis in Cary. When I go to visit her are there any areas where I can shoot waterfowl in the area?

Thanks for looking.
An eagle weighs between 6-12 pounds with 40" wing span
An osprey weighs about 4-5 pounds with 33" inch wing span

Excellent download, Larry---it seems like most of our eagles wait until an osprey catches a fish and then dives on it forcing it to give up its catch!
