Over the weekend I went eagle hunting. For most of the day they were most uncooperative and remained too far away for any good shots. However I did manage this photo (and a few others). When ever an this particular osprey ventured into the "private" fishing area of this eagle he would start screaming and launch out of the trees to dive the osprey off. The two birds soared and dove after each other for sometimes 15 minutes at a time. No contact was ever made but the chase and dives were exciting to watch. This was the only shot that had both of their faces visible as their circles often left them looking away from the camera.
The image was taken with a Nikon D850 with a 600mm f4 prime lens using auto ISO,manual mode, single point group dynamic focus and was handheld. That is about an 11 pound rig to swing while chasing a pair of fast moving birds and maintain focus.

We have eagle - osprey interactions frequently here in Montana. You captured a good one!
Great images! Sharp and great detail.
A good one! Must have been fun to watch them.

Thanks. With all whirling and diving it was both hard and exciting.

Thanks very much. The auto focus on the D850 is amazing.

It was exciting and really interesting to watch how fast they turned in mid air.
