Netflix (streaming) is currently showing The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez about an 8 year old boy tortured and beaten to death by his mother and her boyfriend. The documentary details the trial of these two monsters and the total (and ongoing) failure of the Los Angeles Department of Child Services along with the Sheriff's Department. Aside from the incomprehensibility of how anyone could do this, it exposes the equivalent of the military-industrial complex (we were warned by President Eisenhower) in the field of services to the poor.

While I have not seen the Netflix drama you are discussing I have spent 30 years arresting and later babysitting felons, both male and female, who have done similar heinous crimes toward children, the elderly and just plain the rest of us. The do-gooders in our society often forget the pain and suffering by the victims while looking for ways to forgive and explain away the disgusting actions of the felons.
Civilians have no idea of the evil in the world and usually just go merrily through life thinking all is well IF it is well for them. Perhaps that is the way it should be.

In my humble opinion, anyone that tortures, maims or kills, children, the elderly and animals, doesn't deserve to live in our society.
And life in prison is too good a punishment for them.

I will add women to the list and will happily and enthusiastically provide the ammunition!
I can't watch videos of that nature.
How anyone could do that is beyond my comprehension...

I, too, have not seen the Netflix drama, and we would not wish to.
Luckily, life has been extraordinarily interesting for me, I’m 75, and while I acknowledge people come in all shapes and sizes, in an effort to understand I put it down to the myriad ways in which we were raised by our parents.
There are so many ways, good and bad, that we are brought up. Some not even knowing who their father was.
I don’t condone these terrible acts but, maybe, there’s some understanding there.

What's military got to do with it? I doubt that is what Ike was referring to in his speech.

Who said anything about the military?

I have many friends and relatives who were, and are on the job. Regretfully I was never able to serve, and probably a good thing I was unable to serve, I'd probably wouldn't have lasted past the first call! It take a very unique and strong person to be an LEO, and for that I thank you for your service and sacrifices.
You are correct by stating that society today are clueless, and the slap on the wrist punishment (If even applied) doesn't deter a thing.
I'm a firm believer, the punishment should fit the crime. You sexually assault and kill a person, then the criminal should be sexually assaulted and killed in the same manner. Sounds barbaric? What these animals do on a daily and repeat basis is nothing less than barbaric.

Sitting in a full doctor's office waiting room. Mother with three kids, youngest a toddler sitting across from me. The little one on the floor starting to act up (people tend to forget how time operates for toddlers and young people.) One by one they all smack the toddler for acting up, yet none thought to maybe divert his attention and show him some affection. I just sat there wondering what that little one was learning. His siblings sure learned well. Act up get smacked.
When he turned to me I started to interact with him from across the room and all was fine until his mother started shooting me looks. Thankfully, they went in to see the doctor next.

Dennis, there is a fellow currently in our city who is a large young man who immigrated here from Somalia that has a violent history here of attacking women and beating them severely as well as robbing them. I'm positive that murder is in his near future.
The crazy thing is that he has an I.Q. of 40 so the courts keep releasing him based on, "He doesn't have the ability to assist in his own defense". I'm a proponent of a 45-caliber solution to his 40 I.Q.
There are true monsters all around us. We just expect them to look like those in the movies.

Probably 30 years ago, I put together a consulting team to make recommendations about the Health Care provision for Foster Children, in Baltimore City. It was an eye opener. The stories we came upon were certainly not like the Netflix story, although just as certainly they were there and we simply did not witness them for ourselves; but the quality of care and ability to monitor the kids was abysmal. The vast majority of caseworkers were incredibly dedicated and caring, but the huge quantity of cases they were forced to oversee, as well as the legal restrictions under which they worked made the entire system pathetically poor. One supervisor and I went to lunch one day and I asked her about her view of the future of these children. She literally began to cry and said, "We are raising an entire generation of potential psychopaths."
God made people w/o HEARTS!!
