Did I miss that in his original post or do you remember him saying that previously?

Dennis

He said that several threads ago.

I suspect that the unboxers are faddish types who want to make videos more than they want to use lenses, cameras, etc. They probably rent the items, make the videos, and return the items. If they were real photo enthusiasts, they would most likely include more details on the items, and examples of the images the items produced. I find the unboxing videos to be annoying. When I view gear videos, I want details, and examples of images, because I am considering the gear for purchase, and want to compare it against other items being considered. I do rely upon Ken Rockwell more than upon unboxers. Matt Granger also provides good information, with good examples. The unboxers who do buy the gear are-I suspect-of the ‘keep up with / ahead of the Joneses’ type who want to be the first, or next, to have some particular item and who thus make the unboxing videos to brag about having the items shown. Using the items is of little interest to these folks. They need to be seen to possess the items...to rub their egos, and earn the envy of similar folk.

What's the difference between an unboxing video and a Brown Truck post on UHH?

Not wanting to burden fellow Hoggers with a lens recommendation, again, I did some research on the 55-300 VR (I know I'm leaving out most of the alphabet of specs). It's relatively cheap for its quality and I could probably afford it next month. I watched several Youtube reviews and I've got to admit there's something I don't understand.
What the &*$* is the fascination with unboxing? One clown spent 5 minutes of a less than 10 minute video taking the lens out of the box. Que????? Many reviews listed unboxing in the title. I just don't get it.
Finally, in disgust, I went to Ken Rockwell. He confirmed what I'd surmised from photos in the Youtube vids. The lens is a bit soft at full extension, but he added the final nail in the coffin of that lens selection, slow autofocus. I decided to adhere to his recommendation for the 70-300 VR. I'll have to save a little longer, but I think it's the better lens.
Anyone who uses either lens is more than welcome to reply.

I happened to be on KEH just now. They had the 70-300 excellent condition with caps and hood for $235.

I have the NIKON NIKKOR 70-300MM F/4.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR AUTOFOCUS LENS you listed as one of the lenses you're looking at. That's the older version of the current full frame 70-300mm AF-P. It's very sharp from 70-200mm but gets a little softer in the 200-300mm range.

I'm not sure why the full frame AF-S (silent wave motor) version is still listed on Nikon's website. It has been replaced by the full frame AF-P (stepping motor) version

Maybe they still have the AF-S variant in inventory - which may be fortunate for those who cannot use the AF-P variant.

Hopefully, our OP recognizes their ancient D300 cannot be updated to use any AF-P lenses ....

I got that lens along with the 18-55 when i bought my d7200. The focus isnt that slow. Maybe not as fast as some others but ive never had any issues really. Rockwells main complaint imo was that you need to switch the autofocus off if you want to focus manually. He also said the optical quality is very good. Granted i dont use this lense too much anymore since i got the 18-140 but imo the 55-300 isnt a bad lens at all.

Unboxing - surely one of the most pointless activities on this planet?

Self absorption. I watch very few you tube videos.

Self-absorption is a wide umbrella. I think a lot on this site fall under that umbrella.
There is a lot of information on YouTube. If you want to know something about cameras and all the related aspects of just that subject, there is a wealth of information. All the names that people label as experts all have informational videos.

I believe you have made a wise decision grasshopper.
And, as a added bonus, I suggest you when you get your lens, you get a glass of your favorite beverage, sit in an easy chair, have the wife and children gathered around, and take your time unboxing your new acquisition slowly, very slowly. Have a video made of your family's fascinated expressions as you unbox your new marvel.

With YouTube videos, the longer the video, the more ads can be inserted. The ads generate revenue for the video owner. So the longer the video the more money they make. Simple economics.

Hopefully you jest.

My family doesn’t care about the time I take photographic equipment out of the box any more than they care about when my wife takes new cooking equipment out of its box. It comes, and I carefully but surely unpack it.

What everyone cares about are the photos I take over the following years.
