Excellent set. I've got two trips to "The Bay" planned and will stop on both ways each time. In addition to my regular stop at Mary's Pizza Shack!

Thank you Craig. These refuges are about two hours north of the Bay Area and are at thier best between Nov and mid March. You are welcome to PM me if I can help with more specific info.

Note: I just got your "stop on both ways" comment. If you are comming from the north on I-5 it sounds like you already know what you are doing! You might also consider a look into the Klamath Basin refuges. Have fun!

Thanks Roaddog. I love it too, it has been a life affirming part of my world for more that 59 years. We are fortunate.

Outstanding, Phil! I finally made it there last weekend and was blown away! Visited the Willows and Colusa reserves. Duck and raptor heaven! I'll do a series of posts soon. Thanks to you for the PM advice. I especially loved "the ol' pipe insulation on the car window trick" for camera stability during the auto tours. (Any former Get Smart fans in the house? lol)

Hi Roger, happy to know you had successful visit. Things are still very lively up there. I don't remember if we also talked about Gray Lodge. It is the state counter part with an excellent auto tour. It is about 30 miles east of Colusa and can be made part of a triangle of auto loop refuges. The ride from Colusa to Gray Lodge to Willows takes you through some beautiful rice and orchard land and past many hawks on poles!

All photos shot from a vehicle on the auto tours of the Colusa and Willows refuges. Birds of prey are very active at this point in the winter waterfowl migration. The Merlin was a nice surprise. In order: Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Cooper' Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Merlin and juv. Bald Eagle.

Nice collection, Phil; love the Bald Eagle.
