All photos shot from a vehicle on the auto tours of the Colusa and Willows refuges. Birds of prey are very active at this point in the winter waterfowl migration. The Merlin was a nice surprise. In order: Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Cooper' Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Merlin and juv. Bald Eagle.

Great Images Phil. I'm jealous. I have no excuses considering I live so close.

Thanks Linda! I am convinced that all of our National Wildlife Refuges are treasures in thier optimum seasons. The key is to visit often, get to know the micro habitats, study the behavior of your intended subjects, and patience, patience, patience. I visit the refuges in the SacramentoNWR complex 6-8 times a year and have for over 50 years and each visit brings something new. It has everything to do with moving slowly, paying attention and learning where to look. Thank you for the comment my friend.

Thanks Vic! The Merlin was in the same tree as the Red-tail at an "iffy" distance and both photos are ambitious crops. I was just happy to see the little warrior, they are scarce and shy in these parts. I appreciate your comment.
