Some good Navy experiences that bring back a few memories of mine, August '68 through July '72. I was a corpsman stationed with Marines at Camp LeJeune and took a Med Cruise with them. During it, I rode on a APO Chilton, LPD Austin, LST Graham County and went through a storm in the north Atlantic on the Graham County. We took some rolls of probably 45 degrees to port then to starboard which removed one section of causeway from the side of the ship. It was fun watching the Marines try to move about and keep from losing their meals.

After that I was sent to Camp (Fort now) Drum in upstate NY for cold weather training. Tromping around with Marines in waist deep snow and wind chill to -60 degrees.

Finally got to the Gator Navy and finished my enlistment aboard the Fort Snelling, an LSD.

All in all, not a bad hitch, but I still do not like extremely cold weather. Also, have not had much experience on the seas since.

While on Aircraft Carriers I would watch our escorts in heavy weather spending half their time under water. I always thought they should be getting at least partial submarine pay.

That was an old ship that probably should have been decommissioned before you were on it. Thank for the shout out, Semper FI to you also.

Huh....I guess that reinforces the view of USN/USMC status. While I was on the Chilton I worked down in the message center (teletype operator) and was amazed how nice their equipment was. Much better than what we had at HQ 2nd Division.

Sorry, I've slept a few times since then and don't recall the specifics other than they ran a lot smoother than what I was used to.

When we did field exercises we learned to use a very light touch on the keyboards. If the ground was damp you'd get a electrical tingle in your hands & arms if you hit the keys too hard.
