I agree with many of the comments/replies. I have had two Canon 5DMkii bodies for several years now, and the performance is quite satisfactory. The newer updates may have more features, but I think your decision on whether or not to upgrade or choose a more modern version, comes down to what kind of photography you do. JimR

Yep, it's perfectly fine. Still running my 40D! The best 12mpxl ever. Have an 5DMIV 30.4mpxl FF and all EF-L lenses. I still think crop sensor is better. Truth be told, I have the cheaper L lenses. They are great on the 40D tack sharp. Not so much on the 5DMIV, and yes I micro focused all. It's technique and right place right time. my equipment

Canon 40D/5DMIV EFS/EF Mount
Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8L Gen 1 no stabilize (the 2nd gen was stolen) with 2.0 II tele convert
Cannon 100mm L macro with ring light
Canon 24-70F4L
Tamron 150-600 gen 2 (it's ok but)-----------

All of the above doesn't equal one good 300mm 2.8L prime with an X2 III tele. Those together are roughly 6K
I cant get there money wise. but learning the equipment I do have has taught me a lot...
Maybe one day.....

That's not wedding photography, if you just happen to shoot a few as a guest! I thought you were asking about it as the main photographer! I never shoot wedding without any flashes, I always take several!

I generally serve as the second shooter while my associate does the traditional posed shots and such since I am better at plucking the moment out of the candid shots although we both shoot the actual ceremony from different vantage points.

The 5D Mark II if fully capable as a wedding, portrait, macro, landscape, architecture camera. It's not as "low light capable" as newer cameras, but was among the very best in it's day. I have used mine to ISO 1600 (1/125, EF 24-70/2.8 @ 32mm f/5.6):

And even ISO 6400 (1/25, EF 24-70/2.8 @ 70mm f/2.8):

Again at ISO 6400 (1/200, EF 135/2 @ f/2):

It is NOT an ideal camera for sports or other action photography... although you might "get lucky" with it occasionally! The primary shortcoming of the 5DII for any sort of action photography is it's AF system, which was not improved in any way from the original 5D's. Both use an AF system similar to what was intro'd with the 20D in 2004... a very simple 9-point array with only the center one the better "dual axis/cross type". Actually, the 5D/5DII AF got a pseudo "enhancement" with 6 hidden "focus assist" points, clustered right around the center one... but they only work in AI Servo.

So long as you are shooting portraits, landscapes, weddings, architecture, etc... no problem. One Shot works well. Just don't depend on the camera for any sort of action shots. Even with the "assist points", AI Servo in the 5DII just isn't up to tracking fast moving subjects.... though sometimes "ya get lucky" (ISO 800, 1/8000, EF 300/4 @ f/5.6):

Or, sometimes the critters are very cooperative (ISO 1600, 1/250, EF 300/4 + EF 1.4X @ f/8):

It's difficult to show at Internet sizes and resolutions, but with good lenses and reasonably good technique, the 5DII's 21MP would make 16x24" or even a little larger prints pretty easily.

5DII @ ISO 200, 1/60, EF 20mm f/2.8 @ f/11:

5DII @ ISO 6400, 1/30, EF 20mm f/2.8 @ f/11:

If you are looking for an affordable lens to use on the full frame camera, pick up a Canon EF 28-135mm IS USM. So long as its f/3.5-5.6 aperture isn't a problem, it's a surtprisingly capable lens.... rivals the Canon 24-105L and 24-70L for image quality, focus speed, image stabilization.... just not as well built, and a whole lot cheaper (typically under $200 used).

EF 28-135mm IS USM @ 117mm and f/7.1 (on 7D, ISO 400, 1/800):

EF 28-135mm IS USM @ 100mm and f/7.1 (on 7D, ISO 400, 1/800):

Prior to getting the 5d I have been using the 28-135 on my 50d.
I agree that it is a very good lens

Glad to hear that they do well on the 40d as this means they will do equally well on the 50d that is also among my gear.

Roger that, you should be just fine all the way up to the 90D, or any EFs crop sensor 7dMII for example. It's when you get to full frame is where the glass really matters for the clarity I'm looking for in my own mind! LOL Did a comparison a while back. Took the same photo with the same lens, the 70-200 2.8L on it's tripod foot. Set the focal point for both to roughly 90mm. Had to do the math of 1.6 crop factor for the 40D which equaled 144mm. Only changed the camera body and distance between the 40D and 5DM4. The 40 was just a hare sharper! Wife daughter and son all picked the same shot.... it was the 40 go figure. Micro focused the 5DM4 to the 70-200 and finally they couldn't tell the difference, except for the dynamic clarity of the pixel difference between the two. 10.1mp AP-C versus 30.4mp FF. All were max Jpegs. It's when I checked the RAW files that I noticed a difference between the two in post. The 5DM4 files had much more to work with. Besides that.... no worries.. The 5DM2 is definitely a step up from the 40D. All you need for events is fast lenses and a form of lighting, being on camera or a staging area for weddings for the formal photos. etc... I usually throw the Speedlight on and have fun. Start in Manual mode, set shutter to 200, Fstop to 8 and ISO to 100 or 200 to start, sometimes I'll leave the ISO on auto depending on lighting. Lenses are the 24-70 F4L and the 70-200 F2.8L.

It’s still a solid camera. No reason it shouldn’t work for you.

Not grasping that idea, since all versions

I've only had one digital body...a Canon MK11...and it's still great. I've been a pro for 45 years. No chance of changing.

Why not just test your camera under the sub-par lighting conditions you might anticipate and evaluate the results?
