I thing that I haven't seen suggested is along the James River, I believe it to be route 5. You can find a plantation or 2 They are always a historical must. Also if you make it down to Jamestown, they have discovered the actual site of the original settlement, and I believe you can go in and view what is happening there. Williamsburg requires a couple of day, and don't forget the Ghost Tours if you go.

I grew up in the Richmond area, and while I haven't spent any time there in many years, some things don't change. The Virginia Museum of Fine Art has some wonderful Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces, and a truly spectacular collection of Faberge eggs, etc, made for the Czars.
Shockoe bottom was wonderful during my college years, many years ago. Good to see from the Trip Advisor posts that it still is.

If you are in Richmond during Garden Week "late April" , be sure to tour the residential
area of "Windsor Farms" on the West side- and take the road past the Country club of Va-
down to the University of Richmond, home of the Spiders-I use to fish in the lake there as a Boy.
Born and raised in Richmond until the fateful year (1954) when my Father dragged the family to Syracuse, NY for a new Job.
A dark day... I miss Virginia and Richmond- and be sure to get photos of the Statues on Monument ave.
Who knows how long they will remain...Have fun!!!

My wife and I live here in Richmond....
We visited your state last spring and loved it.
My wife and I went to the Columbus Zoo while there.
Also enjoyed "The Wilds" nearby.

When here try to take in "The Metro Richmond ZOO".

I guess you can tell that we really love to photo animals.

Good to hear you enjoyed your visit to Ohio. IMHO it is a highly underrated destination. We'be been to both the Wilds and the Columbus Zoo, but not for several years. They are on our "Do Again " list for this summer.

And, if not already mentioned, go to Petersburg to the Blandford Cemetery! In the old church are original Tiffany windows. The cemetery is incredible as well.
And before you go, follow the Civil War National Park that starts in Petersburg (Actually in Hopewell, also nearby) and drive along the battlefield ending at the crater. What a story that is! And beautiful landscapes along the way. When you come out of that drive, and to the main road, you turn right and just a short distance to the Old Blandford Church and Cemetery.

Petersburg and the battlefields are definitely on the list. Thanks for the reply.

Some great suggestions. The James River Park. System and the Flood Wall. The Sub Rosa recommendation is excellent. I live here. Happy to join you at some point.

If you do get to the Virginia Museum, be sure to make time for lunch at Amuse, the top floor restaurant with great food and views of the park setting.

Funny how when living in an area there's always time to see a local attraction later.... I lived in the Richmond area from the 5th grade to about 1982, or roughly 28 years, yet I never visited the Poe House, as in Edgar Allen Poe. Just a thought.....
Oh yes, IIRC Virginia Union University has some buildings from the Belgian Congo Exhibit of the 1939 World's Fair, moved to and erected on its campus. Battle Abbey, maintained by the UDC, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, has (or had when last I visited) quite a collection of Civil War weaponry, flags, etc. The "sweet old ladies" who were docents used to tell us that "We used those rifles to shoot the Yankees". Battle Abbey is in the same general area as the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, and nearby there is or was a home for widows of Confederate Veterans, all of whom I am certain have by now long gone to their eternal rewards.
As William Faulkner observed in Requiem for a Nun, "...The past is never dead. It's not even past." For Richmond and much of the Old South this is still true, for good or ill.

Once again, my thanks to all who have replied. We will be in Richmond for 7 days, but I think we would need at least a month to follow all your suggestions.
