I would also suggest a boat ride on the James River to get good shots of Bald Eagles, Osprey and various other birds if you interested in birding. The Eagle population has soared (pun intended) over the past 10 years along the river.
Also a visit to Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg if you are interested in Revolutionary and Civil war history. They are about 45 minutes from Richmond.
Richmond also has many great restaurants and micro breweries.

I lived in Richmond for 22 years. I still go there often. Great locations have been listed by UHH members above. Here's what I recommend.
Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens
Maymont Park (The Italian Garden, Japanese Garden. Waterfall, and Dooley Mansion in particular)
Belle Isle. There's a one-mile road that loops around the island. You cross over a footbridge that hangs by cables under the Lee bridge. You'll have a great view of downtown Richmond from the bridge.
Rockett's Landing. You can get night photos of the downtown area and capture the reflections of city lights in the James River
Shockoe Slip. There are great restaurants, shops, and breweries there. It's a great place for night photography. The Tobacco Company Restaurant is kind of landmark there.
Take the Riverfront Canal Cruise. Here is the website:

Have pizza at Bottom's Up pizza in Shockoe Bottom. It's the best pizza in Richmond.

I wanted to add to my post above but ran out of time to edit it. If you go to Belle Isle, the Tredegar Iron Works is right there only about 1/4 mile away. They produced cannons and munitions there during the Civil War. The American Civil War museum is there at Tredegar. You can park either at Tredegar or the Belle Isle parking lot.

Go to Libby Hill Terrace and Shockoe Bottom. Plus in the classical section of the city, there is some unique architecture. Have breakfast at the Sub Rosa bakery http://www.subrosabakery.com/

Avoid Mosby Court and Creighton Court. They're both dangerous, high crime areas. I heard that thugs in Mosby Court would roll tires down a hill to strike cars stopped at a stop sign. The driver would get out to see what hit their car. At that point the driver would be mugged.

I was blown away by Maymont. If you've got time, Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg are awesome (via the Colonial Parkway). There are also several very cool plantations along the James River.

Edgar Allen Poe lived there his house is a museum... there is a person under the floor and you can hear the heart beat. Another strange thing... one of the hills has a whole passenger train in it where the tunnel caved in trapping them in 1925.

Don't limit your self to Richmond .. the city... Check out the falling hills area in Chesterfield county. Many battles fought there in the uncivil civil war. Be sure to use the Ghost filter.

I strongly urge you to tour and shoot the statuary along Monument Avenue; the political climate there has declared the statues to be politically "incorrect" and actively seek to remove them. I fully expect them to do so in my remaining lifetime. I went to college there in the late '70s and saw the statuary without really noticing them. Also, the adjacent Fan district has beautiful architecture. It was the 'student ghetto' in my time there, but has since been gentrified. You might also get to Hollywood cemetery, not far away, as the mortuary statuary is well-known.
