I prefer #2 because it holds me in place to study the shot.

In #1, my eyes slide off to the right. The use of light to suggest motion is a prominent tool in many Arts. The use of Dark to Light, or Light to Dark, can cause interesting interpretations in one's mind. In #1, the Dark on the left lightens into the Bright on the right. This causes one to view from left to right, with the additional suggestion of the slope (ski-slope?) in that direction. In my minds eye, a set of ski tracks were missing. And the diminishing cry from a dropping skier.

The second one is quite dramatic. The first not so much - and the shadow off to the left is somewhat distracting. I think for this particular scene, the drama works. I wouldn't say that for every scene, however,.

Number 1 shows significant amounts of vignetting. Number 2 draws the eye sharply to the subject without any distraction due to the solid background. Preference? It depends on the taste of the individual.

Couldn't have said it better...

I tend to prefer Number Two on the dark background for this subject. I like the sharp detail of the texture of the wood in the first and I like the way the sprig looks on the second.

What I truly like though is that you are experimenting and to me that shows that you are enjoying doing it and that alone creates a never ending journey of expanding the mind and soul.
