Out of state residents can be charged sales tax in these ways.

Merchant had a ‘point of presence’ or nexus (click through or otherwise) within the recipients state that allow the state to charge sales Tax.

Or the is an Interstate agreement between two states that they would collect and remit each other sales taxes. New York and New Jersey have had one for a long time; Pennsylvania and Connecticut have been added since then.

Recently, US Supreme Court upheld a S. Dakota law that essentially allowed a state to construe nearly anything as a nexus and thus require sales taxes to be collected. Other states are crafting similar laws. However, the law doesn’t kick in until a threshold amount of sales within the state have occurred and very
small business are exempt. But a state has to enact a new law to get the benefit of this ruling and not all have.

There isn’t as of yet a Federal Law on interstate sales taxes - but there are bills in congress.

Overall, sales tax is in everyone’s future; but right now its just mostly there.

You are supposed to report the sales tax you don't pay for online purchases at tax time anyway.

No! Not with B&H. They pay the sales tax and they are essentially lowering the price of the item for you. Sales tax is paid--you get a better deal. This added up to a not insignificant bit of change when I purchased Nikon D850 with 24-120mm lens. It was worth getting the ccard. I only use it for B&H purchases.

Let's face it, states will do anything together cash coming in. If they can get 5-10 $ for every purchase they will do it

Adorama does not charge sales tax. Your information is incorrect.

They do now, I just purchased some items this week and they charged me California sales tax even thought the tax rate was incorrect.

I live in Maryland, put in a dummy order with Adorama and no tax was listed. Also, I have been considering getting the Payboo card at B&H but looked up the bank and it looked like a lot of people had trouble with them. Anyone here had difficulty? If not, I will get it as the not paying the tax amount will clearly add up. As it has turned out, photography has not turned out to be the best choice I could have made while seeking an inexpensive hobby, LOL!

Don't forget the generational recipients on welfare and every other entitlement program on the books.

I presume you will refuse social security and Medicare when they are offered to you?

LOL regarding this particular thread and online sales, etc.

It's just a matter of time before EBAY will be required to get into the act! Just a matter of time!

I spoke to salesperson at Adorama this week re an open box product. He lowered the price while we discussing it then offered free shipping, but said he would have to charge MD sales tax. I decided to check with B&H because, as a prime member, I do not pay shipping and, with my Payboo card, I pay no sales tax.

Hard to beat.

No problem with the bank behind the Payboo card except it charges just under 30% interest on outstanding balances.

Pay the full balance or save your money until you can.

I collect Social Security and Medicare and have paid my share into it since I was 14 years old. I turned 74 just yesterday. Now contrast my situation with the Socialist Liberal Democrat idea of illegal aliens collecting on both right now even though they have never paid one cent into the system. These are not entitlements but more of a return on our investment for those who have paid into the system.

I have the PayBoo card, it’s through Synchrony bank out of Florida. It’s 30% interest so I either pay the full balance the first month or move it to another account if I am spreading out the payments over several months. I have 2 cards for my business so I try to use those so I can write the interest off.

Ebay has already started collecting sales tax on auctions in California. I purchased a used lens from Japan on EBay and the tax was added even though the tax rate was lower than my county. California sales tax varies by several percentage points all over the state.

Before it's over, the gov't will be tracking sales and there will be those that will end up being taxed like a regular business. Just a matter of time with the wonderful world of computers.

"Sales tax?" We folks from Delaware don't know of what you speak.

From what I read, there is sales tax in Delaware, but it is collected from at the vendors' gross receipts level and cannot be passed on to customers. It seems that brick-and-mortar stores in the state of Delaware, when selling Nikon at standard Nikon prices, what have to eat the tax.

I recently made a $400 purchase from Adorama and NO sales tax was charged. Free shipping & great accessories (filters, Corel, Case, etc.) also included. Same deal not available at B & H.

B&H is not required to collect FL sales tax at this time, so we do not do so.

I don't get charged state sales tax, but I got a 10% kickback in the form of an electronic gift card from B&H when I purchased my camera and 2 lenses, and then a separate purchase of a tripod. I used my own personal credit card, so I'm not sure how they handle it on their Payboo card.

It sounds like you're referring to our Rewards points program. More on that here:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/HelpCenter/Payments.jsp#bhRewardsProgram

If a customer uses a Payboo card to buy an item that's eligible for Rewards points, the customer earns the points and receives the tax refund benefit of the Payboo card also.
