What camera bags are we all using and why?

I wanted a backpack that 1) was within carryon dimensions for airplanes, 2) could accommodate my modest equipment, and 3) carry a laptop computer. There are a number of them on the market. With recommendations from a local photography store, and users, I selected Lowepro ProRunner350. Durable, well-designed, and comfortable, it still meets my needs, and still looks brand new.

I use a bag that was designed to be used to carry food. It's insulated and padded, and I can leave it in my car if I need to make a quick run to the grocery store or the like, because it doesn't look like a camera bag.

It ain't elegant, but it gets the job done. :)

I have an Ape Case, I chose it for a couple of reasons. #1 because it has a yellow lining, easier to find the black everything I have and the dividers can easily moved to be set up to match your equipment, #2 because it does not look like a camera bag and you don't see many of them. It does come in 3 sizes so almost everyone could find the size they need, #3 it is sturdy and well padded so I have no qualms about putting my equipment in the bag. My 5 yr old great grandson sat on it one day, I must admit I panicked at the thought, but happily it didn't even phase the top. The padding is really good. Shoulder strap is very comfy and has a handle on top as well. You just have to remember the bigger the bag, the heavier it can get when full :-).

Thanx for your input....I'm looking for a good bag & that sounds great, being able to move the inserts around.

On another note....I always say....the more water you drink, the lighter the bottle (and the backpack) is.

Funny you should ask. I got and returned a bag that didn't have enough Velcro inside. I returned it because it wasn't large enough, not because of the Velcro.

When I emailed the company about it, they said that it was a money thing. In designing a bag, they have to figure it to the penny "to get to the price point." The result was that I was really limited in where I could place the dividers.

My choice was a Digicom Digital case 12"W x 8"L x 8"H.
It's used to carry an FZ-50 bridge camera and all the accessories I'll ever need for this type of camera, including a scaled down instruction manual.
I made myself a promise not to buy anymore devices once the space is full, and so far I'm doing good.
I'm too old to be carrying the better cameras and their bigger components.

Depends what your needs are. If I'm out walking in the hills then i use a Lowe Pro day pack which has a section in the bottom which will carry a DSLR couple of lenses and spare batteries and memory cards. If i'm shooting a wedding then i take a Rolling case manufactured by Calumet. I carry 4 DSLR's 2 speedlights spare lenses and a mac book pro as well as a pile of accessories. Its perfect for wheeling around from location to location on the day. I sure wouldn't want to have to heave it up onto my shoulder so rolling it is a must. .

I just ordered one from Adorama for $25: http://www.adorama.com/GBSLCA.html?utm_source=ET&utm_medium=TransactionalEmail&utm_campaign=1point0product
It clearly isn't for fashion, but I think it will get the job done when I am hiking for photos.

Great post to follow. I have a Lowepro 350 backpack, it has a side entry for a large laptop as well. I am finding it great for carrying a lot of gear, but a pain having to wriggle out of it and put it down to retrieve my camera from it's side opening pocket. I am thinking serously about the Lowepro slingshot 220 model, on the hopes that I can get at the camera without putting the bag on the ground. In a crowded venue I feel awkward doing that. Does anyone have experience in this?

I think we all have different needs and as time goes by I have collected 1/2 dozen different bags that i haven't sold yet. I too have the slingshoot 220 and like it for most stuff my wife has a lowepro holster for her olympus with 70-300 zoom and likes it. I'm now looking at the cotton carrier vest with a lens bag for walking around and hiking in the moutains, seems pretty cool. I,as mentioned by other posters, You have to find one that works for you personally and that seems to change almost as much as my wife changes her mind LOL.

I use three different bags. I have a small Crumpler (six million dollar home!) which I use when I'm only taking one camera and lens as well as filters, cards and batteries. I have an old Tamrac shoulder bag that will hold one camera with 70-200 lens, two other short lenses and another body as well as flash, filter, cards and batteries. Then I have a Lowepro back pack that holds everything except the tripod, which I can strap on the back for hiking. I lust after one of those Think Tank roll-ons that meet airline size restrictions. But Canadian airlines limit the weight of your carry-on to 22 pounds. My Lowepro back pack weighs three pounds leaving me 19 pounds of gear. The Think Tank carry-ons weight ten to twelve pounds leaving little room for gear. The air lines let you take two 22 pound bags but that isn't much help.

I use the smallest Think Tank roller since at my age, I have some difficulty carrying a bag large enough to hold my kit.

I have a Clik Elite Reporter Sling/Waist-Style Bag (Black)and I am SO disappointed in it. The strap is not on an angle that fits a human shoulder so it digs into the neck. I thought it didn't fit because I am 5'4" but my 6'1" husband isn't crazy about it either, and he is the one who has had to carry it for me. I would buy another similar bag in a heartbeat. I go to a lot of sandy beaches where I can't put my bag down. I love being able to swing it in front of me and grab what I need or quickly put a filter away.

Equipment expands to fill the space alloted to it.

I have an Ape Case backpack & Canon backpack for everyday, I have 2 Pelicans to carry my underwater housings and lights when we travel.
The Ape Case seems to be my fayv so far, but could use more room. I look forward to reading what everyones fayv's are as I'm always on the lookout for the next "can't live without" camera accessory.

I use an insulated nylon cooler with a zipper around the top, and cut foam to customize the interior. It is light, super-well padded, protects gear from the heat of the sun, and does not look like anything expensive is inside it. I might be at risk from potential beer thieves, though. Oh, and it cost 15 bucks at a hardware store.
