HGST UltraStar. They're enterprise drives, designed to run 24/7, and they have an excellent reliability record. I've been using a 4TB "renewed" drive for several years.

BackBlaze publishes these stats every quarter.

Look at the Buffalo line - used one for over 10 years only replaced it because the "gurus" said better do so. They offer both wired and wireless. And, their use of the RAID system offers protection against data loss because of a disk failure.

As an alternative have you considered Backblaze. Cloud storage and really excellent.

Not seeing any recent posts in my search; and not sure I trust most Google “best.....” results, I will ask the UHH community:

Need to replace a couple external hard drives (both 1TB) as I am running low on space. One is a Seagate and the other is a Western Digital and I have had no problems with either.

Suggestions/Recommendations on 4TB external Hard drives (not SSD). Using for photo backup only.
Thanks!

I suspect I'm in a very small minority regarding my choice for external drives. I have 4 Fantom Externals(By Micronet) drives for backup. Two are 8 years old and two are 5 years old. Never had an issue. I do redundant backups of my three internal drives using Acronis True Image software.
Anyone else use Fantom Drives?

I have 4 external HD of varying sizes. The main thing I have learned is that I never have enough - my last purchase was an 8tb segate - sadly it already 1/2 full - I'd look at 8 TB minimum - that seems to be the sweet spot in the $ vs value proposition now. Look to a major manufacturer with at least a year warranty.
Also make sure you get one with its own external power supply - your laptop and the drive will thank you - and you get significantly better life and performance

Just picked up a Seagate 8TB at Costco for a very reasonable price at Christmas. Fast and quiet. Also bought a compact 5TB Seagate for mobile shoots at Costco. I love their return policy.

I use 4TB Passports. Never had an issue. I load raw images from the camera into one. I use a second one for processing, etc.

I’d just add that a good return policy is of little use if the data is gone. Please, everyone, whatever drive you buy, backup your data and keep a 3rd off-site disaster recovery copy.

If you do not want to go with Gene51's suggestion for buying a nice enclosure and installing your own enterprise class drive I have had very good luck with G-Drive external drives (owned by Western Digital). They are more expensive than consumer class Seagate or Western Digital enclosed drives but seem to be much faster, perhaps three times faster when writing a large amount of small files. And check B&H for them as they usually have very good prices on these G-Drives.

I would NEVER buy another Seagate anything!! I have had 3 Seagates fail, a 4TB a 2TB and a laptop 750GB, which lasted exactly 30 days before it failed. Forget about warranties as well, they only cover the replacement of the actual HD, not the data.

I contacted Seagate about the failures and all they suggested was a recovery company that started pricing from $750 on up to a possibly $2,500 for data recovery. I have lost too many photos by using Seagates, as the main HD and as backups and they all failed. I never had a problem with my Western Digitals. I would only suggest LaCie, WD and Toshiba.

Seagate has had a mixed record over the years - it really depends on the model drive and at which factory it was produced. I have some Seagate Barracuda 4GB (not TB) drives in my drawer that are probably 25 years old and will still run, but then there was the Seagate Chetah 7 fiasco where over a million drives were returned. More recently, a couple of years ago, Backblaze implemented a particular model Seagate that had a 34% failure rate in the first year, but more recently, their failure rate has been better. I’d still be careful with LaCie, who has won awards for styling, but has had a miserable record for reliability and is now owned by Seagate.
