How many of you fellow UHHers use your camera strap when the camera is on a tripod or monopod? Personally, I remove my strap (it has quick-connects) when on either the tripod or monopod. Maybe I've been foolish and lucky, but have had no problems.

Recently, I saw a photo of a pro photographer who had the camera strap wrapped around his wrist while the camera was on a monopod. Actually, I recall the camera strap as well as another strap on the monopod itself. Now, I can appreciate the concerns for expensive camera and lens being used near groups of folks who might interfere and create a problem. Better safe than sorry, especially as a professional.

But, should I be doing the same? Is it better/safer to leave the strap in place when on the mono or tripod? What are your thoughts and/or experiences in this regard?

For me, indoors on a tripod no strap. All other times on a strap and almost always take the camera with me if I have to go too far from the tripod. Almost lost a camera on a tripod when a sudden gust of wind came up and a plastic bag blew into the tripod acting like a sail. Luckily it was a good, solid tripod and I was able to "de-sail" it before it tipped.

Also somewhat paranoid when shooting in touristy areas. I have seen an attempt by thief to grab and run with a camera on a tripod with the photographer standing right next to it. So if I am shooting in a questionable area, the camera on a tripod and the strap around my neck. Even if no thieves about, people not paying attention can easily walk into the tripod even when the area is not crowded.

Monopod always have the strap wrapped around my lower arm/wrist. BTW - found that using a guitar strap and modifying the ends to be quick disconnects works great. Much more comfortable to wear slung across my body that way as well. I also find guitar straps available in much longer lengths so when on a tripod, I can easily leave the strap around my neck and have plenty of room for movement. No advertising for me unless I get a check when I am out photographing.

I also remove the strap when the camera is on a tripod, but not on a monopod. The tripod will stand by itself, but the monopod won't, so I can see the reasoning behind having the security of the strap. I don't recall ever removing the strap when using a monopod.

I agree Jerry. To confirm my paranoia I saw a professional(?) photographer at a major college game carrying his camera with large lens by the monopod when the bolt attached to the lens broke and the assembly fell to the asphalt. I don't know how much damage was done. I always have the neck (or similar) strap on when using a monopod.

I use a black rapid type strap and don’t advertise for Canon.

Depends on conditions if I take the quick connects off while on tripod. If I’m using the 70-200 I attached its ring to tripod and can leave the black rapid connector on bottom of camera.

When on a tripod I try and remove the strap to prevent any movement from the wind catching on the strap. When carrying the tripod or monopod with camera and lens attached, I make sure the strap is attached and use it as a secondary carrying point in case something bad were to happen like the camera coming off the tripod.

Strap comes off when using my tripod. Else it’s one more thing potentially blowing around causing movement. With a monopod, I’m inconsistent (forgetful?) and not bothered one way or another.

Like you, I prefer the camera be unencumbered in any way when mounted on a tripod/monopod. Agree about the quick releases too. Happy Shooting!

Everyone, including me, had their straps on their camera while on a tripod at last years photo workshops at the outer banks and at Ashville N.C. I reason that if the camera were to fall off the tripod, the straps would catch on the legs of the tripod, and the camera would not hit the ground. I guess if you were camped-out at a location for an extended period of time, taking the straps off might be a consideration...but I would still favor being safe. Just my thoughts.

A strap with the monopod, if properly used, could add additional stability.

When I use the camera indoor or on tripod I prefer no strap but I never take the strap off because I use Nikon strap and no quick connect so it's a pain to remove it. I don't like the quick connects because they could scratch the camera.

I'm curious, what are people using for camera straps. I've tried several and the one I like best is Capturing Couture. It's basic, but it meets my needs.

I use the Black Rapid straps. I have a Double Breathe which I often separate into a single and a Backpack Breathe when I am out hiking and using my backpack.

I use a wrist strap on both cameras, not a neck strap. I do have a large strap if I'm wearing a big lens but I rarely use it...

I shoot off of a tripod 95% of the time. I NEVER use a traditional around the neck style strap. I do have a hand grip strap attached to the L bracket for those rare times when I am not using the tripod. If I am carrying my camera where I want quicker access than my pack, I use a Cotton Carrier chest harness. With this setup I never have to be concerned about attaching or detaching a strap, and I never worry about accidentally getting tangled in a dangling strap and toppling the tripod. While this might not work for others it suits my needs and shooting style perfectly.

While the strap is a pain, I leave it on. I do leave a quick release plate on my camera. When mounting my camera to the tripod, The strap comes off my neck and goes around the gimbal or ball head first. The reason is, there have been a few cases when I didn't attach the arca plate correctly to the tripod. And giving a slight tug to check if mounted correctly caused the camera to come off. I never dropped my camera but having the strap around the center column guarantees the camera won't hit the ground. It only takes once to ruin your day. And removing the camera from the tripod, strap around my neck first before releasing the quick release.
