Sigma 150mm-600 or the Tamron 150mm-600mm G2 any experience with this 2 brands is greatly appreciated, thank you Reina

For either you should test for front / back focus. I am evaluating a Sigma. After adjusting it is good - changes are attached. The Canon 90D group on FB had one example of the Sigma and Canon 100-400 II (probably the best on Canon) and it was not possible to see any difference in image quality. the-digital-picture.com can be used to compare test charts of various lenses, and often with the same body.

Since the G2 seems dissatisfying to you at 600mm, I'm wondering, have you checked with the tap-in console at that setting, to see if the sharpness just needs a bit of adjustment?

I have but that seems like a lot of work and I would have to buy the console. On occasion, 600mm works just fine. When I say I don't use 600mm I can often use 580mm or so and get just great pics. All of my cameras are Canon if that makes any difference.

I have 30 days to evaluate the Sigma and can then return it at no cost. If I can match (or even get close to) Canon 100-400 with the added 200mm reach, and do it for half the cost, for me it's worth a few hours of work.

I am reading that Tamron has the upper hand over Sigma when it comes to overall build and image quality. I have the Tamron 150-600 G2 and I really like it a lot for what little I have used it. But there are plenty of reviews out there on this subject of which one is better.

I have both of these lenses. Have actually used both extensively for bird photography with a decent camera, a Nikon D850. I have numerous posted topics of birds here on the Hog. If you want to take the time you can view my posts and see the evidence of how much sharper my images became with the Tammy 600 G2. It still amazes me how some here readily give advice and show no examples or can you find any posted topics as evidence. When shopping for an UPGRADE from the Sigma I followed the advice of Gene051 and got the Tamron 600 G2. I have NO regrets.

I rented the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, the Sigma 150-600 Sport, and the Tamron 150-600 G2, all for one week each. They I went about my weekly regiment to the San Diego Zoo, Ramona Grasslands, Safari Park, San Diego National Wildlife Refuge, the beaches. I wound up buying the Tamron 150-600 G2. I own both lenses in question and have used them both extensively attached to a Nikon D500. You can get excellent images with either lens. I first bought the Sigma and used it for about a year prior to release of the Tamron G2. I then bought the G2 because I read good things about it and had money burning a hole in my pocket. In my opinion, the Tamron achieves focus a hair quicker, has a useful locking mechanism that allows you to lock the barrel at any focal length and has better weather proofing. Feel free to check out my bird posts here or on my website to see what I've been able to do with that camera/lens combination. Full disclosure: I have never tested the Nikon 200x500 or the Sigma Sport. I picked up the Sigma Sport once and quickly put it back down. I got tired just thinking about packing that beast around.

I have been very happy with the Tamron G2 lens. I too was torn between the Sigma C 150-600 and the Tammy and selected the G2 (and also considered the Nikon 200-500)...I too find that perhaps at 600mm, may need to be adjusted (via tap in console) for pin point accuracy. Usually I back off to 500 or 400 and using a crop sensor camera it is usually enough for me anyway - this spring I will use the console on it to adjust. The other contender in that arena is the Sigma S(port) 150-600 a bit more $$$. N-Photo magazine did a test last year on those four lenses (and some others) but the Sigma 150-600 S came out on top, but it's a beast of a lens (even more so than the Nikon 200-500) and more expensive. If you are splitting hairs literally the Sigma S probably comes out on top, but all four of those lenses are pretty close. I liked that Tamron included fluorine coating and moisture sealing and other features over the Nikon which is why I selected it but the Nikon is competitively priced for it's optical quality.

What you should compare it to is the Canon 100-400L MKII with the Canon EX 1.4x MKIII extender providing 560 mm

The Canon package if purchased new costs twice as much as the Tamron G2 lens. I bet it's a good combination though.

The question to ask is, "If the Tamron was the same price as the Canon, which would you buy and why?".

Well, I have the Tamron G2 and it's for sale for two reasons. One, it is definitely not as sharp as the Nikon 200-500mm. I purchased the Nikon 200-500mm and conducted my own tests and the Tamron is a good lens but it's light hungry and not sharp at 600mm. I'm not going on someone else or what I have read, this was actual testing in a controlled environment. Also, if you read the overall comments on this forum about those two lenses vs. the Nikon 200-500 you will see what I'm talking about. But, at the end of the day, you will have to make that decision but I have come to trust the majority opinions on this great forum.
