Chandler/Gilbert Community College uses only film cameras to teach beginning photography. I know they would love to have your Canons since most of the cameras I have donated to them have been Canons. Roy Pope is the instructor. roypope@yahoo.com.

Over the years I have purchased a lot of camera gear (all Canon), and along the way I've learned that a fair amount of those items, mostly lenses, camera bodies, flash etc. were little more than impulse buys thinking that each one would make me an infinitely better photographer. Fast forward, that was not the case! With that in mind, I would like to donate some of my collection to a worthy charitable entity. All of it has hardly even been used and I would like to see it go to aspiring photographers. If anyone knows of any reliable sites or photo clubs I would most appreciate the info. All of my google searches seemed to direct me to lots of sketchy sites

So I can suggest a great charity that does what I think you are looking for and I have donated equipment to. It is called Freshlens. The website is freshlenschicago.org. It is associated with a Chicago photography school that provides instructors to teach underprivileged high school students photography. They provide equipment for the students to use during the classes and arrange a show for the students work. At the end of the program, students that go through the program are given equipment so they can continue their development. So they are in constant need of both camera bodies and lenses. They do great work and are really passionate about the program. And it is a registered charity and they provide tax receipts. I would definitely recommend Freshlens for your donation.

Thanks Mac! I've decided to take your advice. Being a vet myself I like the idea of contributing my gear to those whom I may served alongside. I contacted my local VA office and they are going to assist me in setting things up

First and foremost, I am so very sorry for your loss! A very commendable and noble thing you have done in setting up a charity. As it is, I've opted to donate my gear to the Veterans Affairs. It was a thought provoking exercise in which fork in the road to take. To that end I am sitting on the fence about upgrading from my 60mm 2.8 macro and my 85mm 1.8 lens. Used both of them maybe 20 or 30 times. Thinking about the 100 mm macro and the 85 1.4. Should I decide to upgrade I will absolutely send the 60 2.8 and the 85 1.8 lenses your way. I certainly enjoyed perusing your website and will keep abreast of events you have going on.

I donated my darkroom to a local High School and the were really happy to get it. I was concerned because everything was going digital but but it all worked out.

I also donated my enlarger and associated darkroom equipment to the high school that our children attended.

I’ve donated old gear to youth programs in NYC and SEATTLE. Check around in your local community. The best source I’ve found is local camera repair stores. They seem to know what programs are out there that can use donated gear.

Look for community workshops or small specialized schools. E
We have one here in Rochester NY and I know other communities have them. They usually teach corses that do not earn a degree.

I am an aspiring photographer with a very limited budget in Atlanta. Consequently, I can’t make the money to get pass the intro DSLRS. I currently have a Nikon D60. However, i want nice professionals DSLRS to practice with and do my first gigs with.
I was sitting here meditating and it occurred to me that there are actual photographers that have extra equipment willing to donate because of upgrades over the years. I would fewl honored and it would be a privilege to accept any gear you no longer have use for or need because I truly plan on making a career in this field. I need help with equipment to start this journey because my expenses are eating any possibility of me buying any gear anytime soon . Please advise. I can send my email just not sure if it’s okay to place that on this forum.

Be aware that many high schools and a few colleges don't want your old film gear, as the old maids that think photo processing will kill us all have been put in charge.

No, It seems to be considered by school administrations that film photography requires the student to both shoot and process. That's a nice idea, but really, if you can't teach high school age students to safely handle darkroom chemicals then you need a new job.

Google to find clubs, and contact local schools where photography is taught. You van also advertise on Craig's List and specify what type of recipient you are looking for (student etc).
