Like many fellow uhh'ers I enter a few photo contests in line with my favoured photography subjects, however I recently came across a photo contest which totally baffled me as to the subject matter, this is it below, does anyone have a clue what I should look in my portfolio for??
"Transitions and displacements are the objects of reflection for our call. The concept of the two terms is a recall to the “liquid” vision of contemporary philosophy. Transitions, displacements, mutations of condition are the prerogatives of a fluid approach to reality, prerogatives of a free change in the state of things that allows full organic adherence to the environment and to the context in which each subject / object is immersed . The works that will take part in the exhibition will represent an excursus on the subject, addressed both from a physical, chemical and biological point of view and from a social, cultural and political one"

Wow. This is quite a collection of esoteric terminology. Wonder if the writer even understands what he/she cobbled together. Also wonder how many entries the contest had.

You own "in a vague way" is an adequate
level of understanding. You could very well
use that to guide your selection process if
you were moved to enter.
Anyone who can avoid a prejudiced knee
jerk response to what is admittedly elitist
verbiage will easily get to the essence of
the call for entries. I have no doubt that
your own "in a vague way" is on track.
The real exclusionary function of all that
excessive jargon is to bounce away those
who abide in their knee jerk reaction and
have no motivation to unpick the jargon.
Such reactions pre-sort photographers
whose work would be of no interest.
I’d take a picture of dry ice after a little water has accumulated and be done with it and them forever!!!

If you can figure it out, enter it! You will

That is EXACTLY the intent of the call.
And those who sense the intent of the
call for entries will know that this call
offers huge freedom, NOT restriction.
This has been a tremendously informative thread.
Sometimes, maybe all too often, I forget that when
playing in a bar I'm amongst folks that are drinking.
I asked the sponsors of this call for entries what they were looking/not looking for. They said "there is no restriction about the interpretation" of the call. So, interpret it any way you want....
This is perfectly and proptietiarily, phenomonologically clear that the adjurying assimilators of the inane insane ambition of the seekers of physical, and cosmological images expounding unreality of the universe beyond the space-time curve, and monkeys wish to instil relativism into their collective body of anal excrement. Submit a photo of pig poop!
I think dramatic sunsets would qualify, especially over a body of water with a reflective object...for both transition and displacement.

Clearly, if you don't know what they're looking for from this abstract, you have no business being in photography and should perhaps consider stamp collecting as an advocation.
Well, in my view the wording is a lot of BS, which is too bad. What it means to me is housed in three words: transitions, displacements and excursus. So, excursus likely means an elaboration. Thus, the contest seems to me to be looking for a not too common example of a theme - melting ice (transition), forced migration displacement), etc.. I would look in your work for unusual depiction of something like that. But, the wording is certainly the sort of wording that makes the eyes roll. If you have an image of steam rising from a fresh cow pie on a cold morning, that might be appropriate. Good luck.

It’s clear as a bell. They want a picture of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.

An idea that's posted without an
example image is no idea at all.
