You missed the point. I guess I'm bad at communicating.....😕

Yeah, I think it was meant to provoke thought about entries and I find it intriguing. Most of these people want to be told “the category is birds” or “flowers”. I like that the category itself is somewhat abstract.

Just because someone doesn't understand something written doesn't mean it was written badly. It may depend on the level of erudition of the reader. Also, writings aimed at a specific target audience may not be readily understood by readers outside that community.

I suspect the audience for the LoosenArt gallery and magazine have no problem understanding the call. Outsiders, like most of us, can choose to dig in and learn the language, or decide it's not our bag and move on.

But, in my opinion, using ridicule to cover up our lack of understanding is not the best response....

Simplicity and brevity are essential to effective writing.
The Gettysburg Address comes to mind.

After completing a first draft, the writer should re-write the piece stripping ALL the words that add no meaning. That is a start to effective writing.

You are replying to my post but you are not addressing the points I raised.

Can a writer not assume a certain level of knowledge and learning in his intended audience? If I don't understand Einstein's scientific papers, does that make him a bad writer? I think not. I don't have what it takes to understand his scientific writings, and, he certainly wasn't thinking of me when he wrote them!

Clearly, there is specialized writing for atypical audiences. Is that your point?

Reminds me of the art critics that thought a banana taped to a wall was high art. Go figure!!

And you remind me of the rabble that didn't like the exhibit where Marcel DuChamps displayed a toilet bowl as a sculpture. "That's not art," the rabble said. A former museum director friend once told me that DuChamp's didn't bill himself as M DuChamps, toilet maker, but as M Duchamps, sculptor.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it wrong or worthy of scorn.

Yes, partly. I might not use the word "atypical" to describe them, but here we have an art gallery writing to a community of artists. I'm sure the target audience gets it.

I'd be willing to bet that only a very small subset of the art community got that one. A larger subset will lie and act like they got it. The rest will be in the dark and freely admit it.

I had an art professor who wrote some gibberish like that as a test, to provoke a reaction. When most of us giggled and scoffed, he said we should AVOID that reaction by NOT writing pretentious bullshit.

"It's the mark of highly-learned folk that they write simply, to be understood by the broadest audience. Don't insult your reader with obfuscation. It is an insulting exercise in snobbish exclusivity." (quote from my notes)

You have made me smile. I had a junior high english teacher that often said, "eschew obfuscation." Delightful.

I dunno. That quote had a slight air of snobbish exclusivity. 😜🤪

It reminded me of a particular episode of the old Dick Van Dyke show:
