Transitions, displacements, mutations of condition are the prerogatives of a fluid approach to reality, prerogatives of a free change in the state of things that allows full organic adherence to the environment and to the context in which each subject / object is immersed . The works that will take part in the exhibition will represent an excursus on the subject, addressed both from a physical, chemical and biological point of view and from a social, cultural and political one"

Wow! With a description like that, you can imagine what the judging will be like.

They are looking for your take on it... you are looking to supply a concrete answer like a geometry question, when they are looking for a theoretical math answer... Guaranteed, if you can convince them of your take and its an exceptional image- it will go well for you.

Art is not about coloring in the lines, its breaking the "box".

That being said- i don't get the description either, i don;t think it is concise- so I would take it as open ended- what i think it means- and do my own thing and be prepared to support my view. Who cares if they like it if I do?

Yep I have a BFA

If you can figure it out, enter it! You will probably have very limited competition!

I think I got it! A pair of photographs. Both self portraits of the artist's face. One just after reading the contest rules and then a later one showing the artist after understanding what they mean!

You can use the same confused image for both.

Thanks for a reply that actually fits. Most of the HHs above are just grumpy, or would prefer something simple for a contest, like "a picture of an apple" or "a picture of a building."

The contest seems to me to allow for a very wide range of subjects, but must show some change or growth or decay. Those attributes are ones that can make a picture very interesting. Several possibilities come to mind: a graveyard, a burned-out building, a junkyard, a growing garden, a wilted garden, a wilted flower, a birth, a death, a confirmation, a wedding. Particularly interesting in the contest language is asking for showing some philosophical change, and I'd have to think about how to show that.

I suppose I'll get some blow-back from this.

I think a picture of a homeless illegal felon, who is a rainbow activist and has urinated on themselves is the subject they’re looking for?

Don't worry. You're certainly not alone. Even as a current MFA student who is used to this language, I am having trouble with this. It is so broad and is rather vague. I understand that they are looking for states of transition. I actually surprised that the term "liminl space" wasn't thrown in there as is one of the more popular buzzwords when I was in undergrad a few years ago.

Probably perhaps, social states of transition, such as the awkwardness of tweens becoming teens and so forth. But it is extremely hard to tell here.

Unfortunately, what I a have found is that this language works as a form of exclusion to maintain a certain prestige and a small circle. I tend to avoid these types of calls for entry.

Darkroom317,
Commendably well and thoughtfully expressed!
Apt points cogently made.
Clearly, there is yet a place for the articulate artist!

Could be someone trying to communicate something. Like my assistant project engineer once said in the company newsletter "The office is defining a comprehensive upgrade scope to provide a cost-effective implementation. We have developed a scheme to implement the various commitments, listing the affected devices and their functions, thus being able to analyze and implement an appropriate scheme."

Well said!

People respond to this kind of thing with ridicule (they can't think outside the box), with humor (treat it as a joke), or with an open, inquisitive mind that reserves judgment....

You are in the minority but your contribution is valuable!

Thanks. I am fortunate enough to have a BA in Journalism in addition to my BFA in art. It makes for an interesting balance when writing artist statements and understanding art speak.
