I found by keeping several towels and flannel blankets over or wrapped around my gear (camera bag with gear) that the extreme cold doesn't reach the equipment.
I even tried this overnight in the car with temps in the teens,...all gear was maybe comfortably cool but not freezing cold as if left unwrapped or exposed in the car,...so now I load my gear into the car the night,...wrap it protectively,...get up,...dress,..and am ready and packed to go out in the early AM or before sunrise during the bitter winter months.
That's my experience anyway,.... it saves me time taking my gear from the house and putting into the car before leaving. I always recover my gear during stop and go shooting or following intermittent hikes anyway. Seems to work pretty consistently for me up here in down east Maine.

Oh boy now you open a different can of worms called the boiling heat. Temps inside a closed vehicle can reach 130 or more in just minutes.

Depending on the color of the car (black cars are literally the hottest) and heat of the day, temperatures can exceed 180°. Does anyone wonder why a person would be charged with abuse of a child or an animal? And it can be abuse of a camera too. Most cameras' maximum operating temperatures are 140°. Wherever you keep the camera in the car, it will need to be protected from both cold and heat.

I don't see any reason to leave a camera in a car when very hot or cold. When I have some gear
I keep one bag that has to go inside. Also with my valuables usually. A backpack. When I had the pleasure of traveling with crews as a producer the DP would carry the main video camera everywhere with him.
Almost all the time air personnel saw the Porta-Brace medium size camcorder bag. The camera and
lens about was worth thousands.
One issue that bothers me more his heat. I had a new Sony camera in Mexico and it fogged
up from the heat. I finally got rid of the fogging. Camera survived after some time.
Can you forget the camera in a restuarant? Strap around leg or arm. Booth block your way
out of booth. etc.

If you live in Oz, the best way to keep the camera "warm" in the car is to put it in the esky with the beer!

Here's an option that might make a difference for you. If you'd like to bring the camera in the house but are afraid you'd forget it, then check out thetileapp.com. You set up the app on your phone, and attach one of their little tiles or tile stickers (there are several options) to whatever it is you don't want to lose, such as your camera. Then if you start to leave home without the camera, your phone will alert you to that fact that you're forgetting it.

My daughter gave me a tile for Christmas, and it is wonderful. I keep the tile on my keys. If I have my phone but can't find the keys, the phone app can make the tile beep until I find them, plus it will show on a map where it is located and I can really zoom in if necessary. Likewise, if I have the keys but can't find the phone, pressing the button on the tile will make the phone ring until I find it. Life is good.

i am tired of never having my camera in my car only to see something I would like to have a picture of. I don't want my D7200 with the longer lens left in my car because it would be seen (I have a suv. But I do have al cool pix B700 I would be happy leaving in the car. Batteries lose their charge in the cold. Does anyone have a suggestion to keeping it warm.
Thanks, Mary

I keep a small DSLR camera in the car all the time except hot summer weather, wrapped in a towel to hide and cushion it. Whenever I want to use it I have driven somewhere and the car has "warmed up". The camera always works for the few shots I want; using it in the car reminds me to check/replace the battery.
If I am going somewhere to take pictures I take another camera for the extended and more versatile shooting.
Keeping that old "obsolete" camera when you buy a new one can cheaply provide an expendable but good quality camera for the extra risk situations (like car break ins).

Keep the batteries in your pocket.

Get you some hand warmers, activate them and put them in your camera bag.

Mary, your problem is not nrew and we have all faced it at one time. Simply keep the camera in your car and remove the chip and battery when not in use. My CoolPix has never been away from its car in 10 yrs. Chip and battery come inside during cold wx.

Chip??? Do you mean the SD card?

Just bring the camera with you when you get in your car. Bring it with you when you leave the car. The car doesn’t matter.

Keeping a camera in a padded case, along with a [maintained] dehumifier pouch, and inside a "sealed" ice chest, would seem to reduce vibration, dangerous humidity and temperature swings. "Photo 1"

Living in Ohio I would never consider leaving any of my cameras in the car. Even my Coolpix goes with me when leaving the car even in warm weather. No reason to tempt Mother Nature or a thief.

I would use a small cooler, the type one uses for storing lunch at work. Keep the lid on tight and it should keep the cold out.

I keep a Kodak point and shoot in every car, and it self-discharges in addition to losing capacity in the cold. I just charge them every month and everything is fine.
