Look at it this way.
The current flintlock as used by the military was also used by civilians.
If the founders intended to deny the civilians from having the latest assault rifle of the day they would have said so.
Like saying no citizen can own a current flintlock as that is too dangerous. They can only own matchlock rifles and pistols.
That sounds as stupid as banning sporting rifles like the AR15. Or other semi automatic sporting rifles like the Ruger Mini 14 or the
Marlin Camp Carbine.
