Should assault rifles be banned, and why? This was a recent question on a survey

What is the definition of an assault rifle? A semi-auto is not an assault rifle. A black rifle is not an assault rifle.
Bottom line ...no, they should not be banned, in fact, it is your duty as an American to own one and know how to use it.
Assault rifles, and I have a few near me, have never, ever threatened me. They just lay there looking sweet.
Think about this....every "right" you enjoy as an American was made possible by a firearm! Every last one.

"Semi-auto weapons don't have an agenda!" NRA little red book, page 10.

"It's the knives and the hammers and the drunk cars that are the real worry!" NRA little red book, page 11.

And in the end that is the only guarantee of keeping those rights.

I offer a nomenclature and cliche clearing house early in the thread and I'm judged harshly by the dour and po-faced.

Your no.1 new year's resolution must be ... "I will learn how to handle the t***h."

Chicago has a ban on assault rifles. In Chicago 2,721 people have been shot this year.

There is a rumor that the 2,721 people were shot by people, not mechanical devices.

I'd like to help you, but I'm not afraid to acknowledge my lack of qualifications and sk**l. Would that you weren't afraid to acknowledge yours.

You may claim the Dictionary.com has an agenda - I wouldn't know - but their definition of "assault rifle", which makes sense, includes:

"a nonmilitary weapon modeled on the military assault rifle, usually modified to allow only semiautomatic fire."

It is just a question of semantics. We could create a new word to include any weapon capable of shooting X number of people in under Y seconds. I think most people would not consider a knife in the same category of weapon as one that allows you to shoot down dozens of people in a matter of minutes.

The rifle itself is not a problem - a semiautomatic "black rifle" differs from the hunting rifles owned by millions mostly in the ability to have high-capacity magazines. A rational solution would be to limit the size of magazines and design civilian rifles so that two steps would be required to change the magazine. There would still be lunatics in high hotel rooms, but it would reduce the mega-carnage that we see.

By the way, I own a number of semi-auto pistols as well as a "black rifle".
