Yeah that explains it as I switched from Nikon to Nikon and again to Nikon.

Yep! Went from Minolta (killed two bodies a year!) to Nikon. Tried Canon. Stuck with Nikon. Although, now for fun, have Olympus and Lumix in the mix!!

Nikon is not going out of business, but it may well be getting out of the Photography (Imaging Products) business. You don't have to take Tony Whatshisname's word for it, you can read it between the lines of the Nikon Company Report.

According to the 2019 Nikon Company Report, " Nikon has defined three areas of long-term growth, namely, Digital Manufacturing, Vision Systems / Robotics, and Healthcare. " (Note, no mention of Imaging Products in the long-term growth plan).

Nikon had expected to fuel this growth through "enhanced profitability" from its core Imaging Products sector with a goal of "Stable, secure ¥20.0 billion or more in operating profit as a base cash flow for Nikon".

Instead, Imaging Products had a 84.5% decline in profits for the year even though its new mirrorless line sold well. Nikon now acknowledges that "The market contraction is expected to continue for the Imaging Products Business."

Nikon's long-term plan is to diversify away from its Imaging Products Business, but now it is in a race against time. Their recent moves to put all independent service and repair providers out of business is a first step towards their 'enhanced profitability'.

I think the entire photography industry is in for a financial shock over the next few years. 2 friends are not replacing DSLR cameras because their phones are adequate for most of their needs, and their older cameras will be just fine when a phone isn’t adequate.

I think you are right. They do not have the a factory move to explain their loss of profits like Olympus does. That still doesn't mean that they are going to go out of business. But the upper end market, above and beyond the cellphones, has become smaller and tighter. There probably will be ones that do not survive. It may just depend on whether or not a company will stay in the "niche" market "come hell or high water".

TN is a click monster - I unsubscribed and stopped watching his videos after the despicable hatchet job he did on Steve McCurry.

OH HELP, THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING. And since I said this on the internet, IT MUST BE TRUE.

We will see the melting of the polar ice cap first. Northrop has his own agenda-himself.

Maybe some people are happy with the brand they are using and have been using for years.
They know it inside out and gets the images they want in the way they want them.
So not afraid of changing brands, just no need to do so.

I think TN is a shameless, self-promoting tool. Always ready to stir up controversy, often producing word-salad in defense of his proclamations. There is no fact in this latest piece of fiction. I wouldn't go out and short Nikon's stock on this info.

I have Northrup’s books and subscribe to his site but I think he sometimes goes beyond his pay grade. He is certainly entitled to his opinion but he is not the source I would seek for an in-depth analysis of Nikon’s (or anyone’s) financial prospects.
