I agree about the bridge being distracting so I like 2 better. I like the cropping and the curve of the freeway leading us deeper into the city. Leaves more for the imagination,👍!

I prefer the second photo, also.
How about posting a ten year old photo so we can see for ourselves how much the skyline has changed.
I have a photo of the San Francisco skyline taken from a Harbor cruise around 1960. I haven't been there in years but have compared it to pictures from others posted here on UHH or Google images. In the 1960 photo, the Ferry Building is a prominent feature of the skyline, in newer photos the Ferry Building is hardly noticeable with all the high rises around it.

One shot incorporates the curving bridge rail and the other zooms in more on the freeway (Interstate 5) and the skyline. Which do you prefer, if either. Thanks for taking a look and leaving a comment if you so desire. Any thoughts on how to improve these shots are welcome. Nikon D810 with a Tamron 24x70MM, f/2.8 G2 lens. (PS: If you look close at the first shot you will see one of our many homeless encampments in the lower left corner.)

Nice shots, but the second one I think is better. The railing in the first picture is somewhat distracting to the cityscape.

Great shots both, but I think 2 is cleaner. I love the river of light effect on the expressway. In the 70s and 80s I did similar work in Chicago and Philadelphia but on 4x5 ektachrome, exposures would run to thirty and fourty minutes!

Beautiful set, although I, too, lean toward #2.

I love both photos a lot. The color of the bridge railing and wondering where it leads is pretty cool, and the 2nd one makes me concentrate on the beautiful sky scrappers and cars wizzing by.I’d be proud of both of them!

On my D800 E and D810 .. I used a Nikon 24-70 2.8 and still use the same lens today on my D850 .., the clarity is a little sharper than the non Nikon G you were using ... , Did you use electronic shutter and mirror up ..obviously a tripod .., I see you were at 62mm and f11 .. generally I’d bracket a bit ..then choose the one that would allow the best post editing .., I think the shot is nice .., I’d take the RAW and so some editing to refine the shot ... that’s about it ...

Thanks. Used a remote shutter (but not mirror up) on a tripod. The bridge is not completely stationary. It vibrates just a bit when cars go by. It's a busy bridge. I tried a number of different focal lengths, shutter speeds and apertures (but all on ISO 100). I took quite a few shots (all RAW and processed in ACR/Photoshop CC) and picked the two I thought were the best that I have processed so far.

The first one has more interest imo. My eye followed the railing and jumped onto the freeway and led me into the city.

Rather than being a distraction the bridge in the first shot anchors the photo, telling the viewer whence it was taken and suggesting the effort needed to get to the location and set up the shot. The bridge slows down the viewer's eye allowing it to saunter to the right rather than zip along the light trails. The second photo is technically excellent but the first invites the viewer in so as to walk along the bridge and perhaps lean over the railing to contemplate the scene.
