Just got the new Macbook Pro 16”. Great processing power but also pricy. Love the screen.

I would recomend the Lenovo - Yoga C740 2-in-1 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 12GB Memory - 512GB Solid State Drive. It is 4K and a great computer. I have 14" version of this computer and carry it at my shoots with a card reader and a 2TB external WD passport drive. Sometimes I tether my computer to the camera and show the shots to the client right away.

I use a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd Gen but it is not in the economical price range.

I had a Dell Precision Mobile Workstation M6700 which I loved and it handled everything extremely well considering the age. It is still running, with Windows 10 Pro, and would work well for me except I handed it over to my daughter to address her needs. I bought the M6700 on eBay, manufacturer refurbished and sold by Dell with 3-year warranty, for $1.200 as a near bare bones machine in 2013 and upgraded it over the years---RAM, SSD, and video card. It is quite a reliable performance machine. You can get one its decendants, the M6800, on eBay, refurbished by Dell, for about $650 now. I know that a few will share their disdain for eBay but if you are careful and do your research you stand to garner some impressive deals. The M6700 and M6800 have a 17.3-inch screen and if the screen size is not an issue, I would recommend these as options. I tried to paste a link but it took up a good portion of this post. Dells have been rock solid reliable and I think my daughter's M6700 is indicative of this. Over the six and a half years, the only repairs I have made were to replace the GPU fan---it has a dedicated graphics card---and the battery once. The machine is very easy to upgrade the hard drives and memory. The video card takes a bit more effort and a may require a transmogrification of the driver. My daughter's M6700 has 32GB RAM, two 1TB SSDs, and a 4K 8GB nVidia card and it keeps on performing.

If screen size is an issue and you wish to remain economical, then check out the Asus line. I helped a UHH member select an Asus and he has been very pleased with the laptop.

If you wish, too, send me a private message and I will be glad to assist you in your quest.

A desktop, because you can upgrade them when needed. And build your own, you will save a lot of money!

A desktop is not very portable, is it?
The OP asked about laptops, not desktops, and I'm sure he had a reason for doing so.

Looking to buy a laptop for studio work and would like some input. What do you recommend?

I have both a Lenovo YOGA 900 and 910. Fast, light weight, 4K display, good battery life. Both work very well for my image / video processing work.

It's amazing how desktops and laptops have advanced in just a few years. I bought my first HP laptop in 2009, my second one in 2012, a Lenovo. Both still work, and have 15" screens, but I use my Lenovo mainly. After the Christmas expenses are over, I will take a look at a new laptop in the first quarter of 2020. Some even mentioned on this Post. This post was informative.

Been using 15" MacBook Pros for about 9 years. Both Core i7s. Ram has varied between 4 and 16gb. Premium video option. Any amount of storage will work but more is better. My camera sensor is up to 45mb now, and the MacBook continues to run with little hesitation. A middle-tier MB Pro will perform well out of the box without worrying about upgrades. The performance has been a pleasant surprise after 20+ years of desktop and laptop Windows machines.

I use a Samsung I7, 8 GB RAM, 1TB HD with a 17" screen, shared graphics. Was about $1200 when purchased on sale at Staples. Came with Win 8, updated to 10 as soon as could. Price includes the price of Microsoft Office 2013. About a year after I got it the HD had to be replaced, but have had no HD problems since. Think I bought it in 2014 or 15. So, not surprisingly the battery had to be replaced recently. Works fine for it's age.

I have a Dell XPS15 with a touch screen 3840 x 2160 4k display, 32 Gb RAM, 2 Tb SSD drive, SD slot, HDMI, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt USB-C ports. A real workhorse. Right now, the Dell XPS 15 7590 similarily configured is $2400.

One great thing about Dell is, once your warranty is expired, or you want to upgrade components, you can download a complete service manual which lets you know how to muck about under the hood.

I've got the same thing with the OLED display. Everytime I turn it on, I'm taken aback by the gorgeous screen.

I have 3 laptops. The one I use most for PP is an Acer Aspire 3 with an AMD Ryzen processor, 8 GB DDR4 memory, 1TB HD and Radeon Vega Graphics. It also has a built in SD card reader, CD reader/writer, HDMI port and 15 in. screen.
It seems to have no problems running any of the many PP programs I have on it.
