Sharp shinned hawk..nice shot

Thanks

Around here it is 90% chance to be a Cooper's - a pair have raised broods in the neighborhood the last 2-3 years.
This one would be on the large end of the size scale for Sharp Shinned. Which ever it is the eyes are still yellow so it is young.
But, I have seen a sharp shinned a few years ago so maybe I have both types hanging around now.

Very nice Robert.
Not everyone can have a bird feeder and a hawk feeder too.

Thanks, my doves and small birds are so thrilled about it.

Have not heard of this hawk.
Enjoyed viewing this one!

Thank you
That would be Henery the chicken hawk of the Henery Hawk and Foghorn Leghorn cartoons. (aka Henry - but in the cartoons it was Henery the Baby Chicken Hawk)

Besides the yard next door getting the dead tree removed and the one with a dead top trimmed so they don't have perches that are both safe and a good view before coming to my feeders this guy seems to be a permanent fixture around here now. Perched on trees, cruising over on patrol, perched on the phone and power lines, landing in my yard etc. Even when I can't see or hear calls I can tell when it is around by the birds being extremely skittish.
On the 21st when the first brave dove in hours came down on the old swing set and just as I was focusing BAM! gone. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something land on the wires, turned my head and here is Henery Hawk.

80D, Tamron 150-600 @ 600, 1/250 @ f/8.0, ISO 800 with fill flash off a tripod at about 60'-70'

I think I like the head position of #1 better but #2 is just a hair sharper.

I had a similar experience about a month ago. I had the dog out in the yard and there were a lot of birds around. The next thing I heard was the hawk flying past my head and landing in the largest tree. Really caused some consternation in the birds. They disappeared quickly.

Rounded tail feathers and brown color say this is an immature Coopers Hawk. Looks small so likely a male.

Nice shots. There will definitely be less small birds around with him there. Have a couple of feeders in my front yard, used to get a lot of birds until a hawk showed up. He would sit on the wires and just wait for the small birds to come to the feeder.

Nice shots. Cooper's Hawks learn quickly that bird feeders are designed for hawks too. They learn that over hunting a feeder means no lunch so generally they move their feeding territory periodically. They seem to also have a sense of humor. One will come blasting into a feeder with no intent of making a kill, scattering birds in all directions and then just sit there looking satisfied.

I like his eye better in the first one - there's more of a red tint in his pupil on the second one.
