But they didn't need to cause over $500 in damage since there are food banks and Salvation army's in town that they could get what they need for free without causing damage to someone else's property. Just because they took food and clothing doesn't mean they have the right to cause damage - I have no sympathy for them...they could have gotten what they needed in an honest way. More than likely, if we would have caught them...either I or my husband would have held them at gun point while the other went and called the police.

I agree with you Cindy,
They came equipped to break into something, and if confronted they possible would have turned on you.

One rule followed by thieves is don’t steal anything with a serial number. I doubt that someone drove to a trailhead or where a camper is in a distant location just because they are hungry. The influx of out of staters to an area with boundless beauty but very limited jobs is a recipe for crime. I knew a kid who made his living doing daylight burglaries in Kalispell. I recall him telling of being in a victims home when the owner arrived. He told the owner that he was told by “John” to just come over and he’d be there soon. All the while he had the homeowners wife’s big honk’n diamond ring in his pocket. Not knowing the true nature of the burglars business the homeowner made coffee for him. Brass ball that guy.

Sadly its a sign of the times, moving is not going to change anything, it may give you a sense of security, but it will be fleeting!!!!
I have lived outside St.Louis since 1972 at one time 120 miles and there were still break ins, theft from vehicles etc.in 1995 my home was broken into and all of my guns stolen then, the a##holes came back the following week end for the electronics a new alarm scared them off.3 yrs ago someone stole my utility trailer off my truck sitting in my driveway while I was at work. I now have locks on my trailers, and my work shop, will they stop a thief? nope just slow them down.
I'M sorry about your loss, amazing they did not st... (show quote)

A lock keeps the honest person out!

Apparently the A$$holes that stole all of my guns in 1995 didn't follow the rules

My grandpa always said "a lock will only keep an honest person out"

I agree with all that Cindy. Some people are too stupid for words,
and I have no sympathy for them either; however, because they did not take your
guns, I think it would be wrong to shoot them dead.

So sad, we can't enjoy our outdoors without fear of this happening.

Have you ever been so hungry that you don't think rational thoughts? I have. When I just read your post I had flashbacks of when I was on reconnaissance patrols and hadn't eaten for days. My daughter is homeless somewhere in Colorado. It could have been her. She could be so hungry to steal the food, too much pride to beg, but has the right morals not to steal anything of value,...I hope!!!

Reconvic....first let me say "Thank You" for your service! Without you soldiers - I couldn't live the way I do. Plus I do hope that your daughter finds the strength to seek out the shelters and help that is available for the homeless in her area.

Now saying that, no one and I mean no one has the right for any reason to destroy another person's property. This person cost me over $600 to fix that door. If this person would have just stayed at the camper and waited till I got back...they would have gotten feed and given whatever I had to give. But they didn't...they took a crowbar and destroyed the door to get in. It could have been kids out running around, it could have been someone looking for drugs .. I don't know and I never will but it makes me angry that I have to pay for their selfishness.

If this person did this for food - in town there is a food bank, another 10 miles is a homeless shelter. There is also a salvation army and various other companies and services that are here to help....no need to break in to someone's home, car, camper or anything else.

I reiterate what the Saxman said earlier on this post. "I feel sad for both you and the culprits". I had a thief that was breaking into cars in my neighborhood a few years ago on his knees with a double barreled 12 gauge in his mouth when the cops got there. I am too ashamed to tell you what some of my thoughts were when I was starving. 10 miles away to a shelter??? Goodwill??? Really??? I started not to address this issue because I believe it's impossible to empathize with a person who is "crazy, lazy, filthy, etc" if you or loved ones have not been there. The fact that that they didn't steal anything but food or clothing brought tears to my eyes. I'm the first to jack someone up for even being rude or bullying. I definitely believe in the adage: "if you're not part of the solution then your part of the problem".
