Went out hunting this past week. Left camp at 6 am and got back around 2 to see someone tried to break into our camper! We had the camper parked in a camp spot off a back back dirt road. Nothing has ever happened like this before around here but I am hearing now that it's starting to happen more and more. Even to people's trucks parked at the gated roads.....people are breaking into the vehicles while the hunters are out in the woods.
I think it's time to get out of this valley!
Now get this...at first we didn't think they got into the camper because my camera backpack with gear was still there, the extra guns were still in the camper as well. BUT then I get home and go to unpack and we are missing a jar of peanut butter, a loaf of bread, a package of cheese and my carhart jacket...weird! If someone needed food or clothing...I would have gladly given them all the food in the camper as well as any clothes they needed...but now it's going to cost me over $500 for a new camper door!! It just sucks.
What a shame. Don't let them win. Your not going back will only enable them. Leave someone at camp next time to catch them. If your hunt is not successful away from camp you might have a better one at the camp.
So sorry to see this, Cindy! The world is just getting more difficult. You live in a beautiful area, I would hate to see something like this drive you away.

We were already thinking about moving out of the Flathead Valley...but now...the hubby is fed up...time to head over the mountains to the other side. It's only my hubby and I so no one to leave at camp when we go by ourselves. It's just a shame what is happening in the valley, it's growing so fast and the crime and the drug problem is on the rise.

I know...just ticks me off! We were already looking for a place over by Lewistown anyway...now the hunt is on. No way the hubby wants to stay in the valley now. At least over by Lewistown I will have the Snowy Mountains and the Judith Mountain range to explore!
I'm not sure exactly where you are, and I'm probably a bit nuts, but maybe it was a bear or some such... Just say'n.

It wasn't a bear, a bear would have torn everything apart inside and everything was normal inside....didn't realize the food was missing until we got home and I unloaded the camper...then realized the food was missing.

We live in the country in southern Ohio. 2 weeks ago a female in a white ford pickup acted like she was broke down. A friend of ours stopped to see if he could help. Her boyfriend came out of the woods and robbed him at gunpoint. We usually leave our garage unlocked and keys in our vehicles. Not anymore. It's happening everywhere. Morals and values or the lack of are the main cause. That leads to all kind of problems. Everyone be safe and always be aware of your surroundings.

Wow...that's scary!! Someone would be pretty desperate to try that out here...everyone carries guns either on them or in the vehicles...that would have been a gunfight for sure!
That really stinks Cindy ... sorry to hear it happened. Also sorry that some jerk's bad behavior is driving you to move. But I'm very glad the expensive gear inside wasn't taken. I used to hunt in TX & someone broke into a trailer I had down there ... but they turned the water on & left it ... so it froze. I had to replace all the piping in the trailer. So I have some sense of how you feel. Hope the hunting was good however. Best.
Two solutions.
Hang food from a bag at side of camper with a note to take that instead of break in.
Second: Get a big steel bar, mount it to the side of the camper across the door and put one heavy lock on the bar. The bar seals the door so it no longer preys open, you must cut the lock to get in or use a key.
Warning, any modern pad lock can be opened using a set of circular magnets stacked one on top the other (about five) and it opens any key or combination lock, no marks.

You get bored, come on up and see us.
Sorry to hear and see this Cindy. But I'm afraid things are getting worse in this country.
Look at it this way they didn't take any equipment or guns, that would have been worse.
Were there any one around that might have seen suspicious activity at the time?
With a new door might consider a motion detector alarm in camper. Best of luck in the future what ever you decide.
