Here is the best image I have taken so far of M42 the Great Nebula in Orion. The running man nebula also came out well. To create this image I stacked 3 different sets of images. One that was a stack of 6 Second exposures, One that was a stack of 1 minute exposures and 1 that was a stack of 3 minute exposures. I combined these into a single HDR image so that the Trapezium in the heart of the nebula is still visible and not burned out if you zoom way in. These images where taken with a Canon DSLR using Canon 500mm F4 lens with a 2X teleconverter attached to get a 1000mm focal length. All Comments, suggestions and questions are welcome.
Very interesting. Great work.
As an amateur astronomer surprised you dont have star trails with the 3 minute exposure and you weren't tracking or guiding. I have 8 inch celestron 2000 mm on a gem mount that tracts and get trails of stars.

I was tracking and guiding. The camera and lens were piggy backed on an Apo used for guiding. The Apo was mounted on a Losmandy G 11 mount. I used a Starlight Express Lodestar X2 CCD for guiding the exposures.
Ok I knew something was missing. Nice photo. M42 my all time favorite.
Wow! That's extraordinary with a 500mm lens and a 2X teleconverter. I hate TCs but apparently it works for you.

The 500mm F4.0 Lens and TC from Canon are really good quality. The TC adds a small amount of distortion at the very edge of the field but not enough to make it noticeable without really zooming in.
You and your Canon did very well. I also have been experimenting with 600mm fl camera lens for some of these targets.
