The Canon 500mm F4.0 IS USM lens is superb, when used alone the stars are crisp (no flaring) right to the edge of the field. The 2X teleconverter adds just a small amount of distortion at the edge but not much. I've been piggy backing this camera and lens on a 5 inch APO and using the APO for guiding on an old Losmandy G11 mount. I expect a cooled CCD would do even better on the noise and also allow a lot more of the HA lines through that are currently blocked by the IR filter built into the camera.
