I doubt it. If anything, I'd bet he missed countless interesting capture opportunities because he was so bogged down by all the gear.

We will never know will we. Perhaps he has no interest in things you find interesting to photograph. He just might be happy in his heart with the subjects HE wants to photograph rather than what you want to photograph.

I am honestly not trying to be rude but it does seem to be him carrying the gear and taking the photos. Not one of us here has any right to make a negative comment about his choice of gear.

Plenty of gear increases the possibility of soothing getting lost or stolen. Why chance it? Besides, if I left my "baby" behind the next sight won't be pretty. I will cry like a new born child.

Did you leave your children home because they MIGHT be kidnapped? Asking for a friend. I am another person who might take three cameras with me. If not in use I keep them locked in the truck. But they will be there if I decide to use one of them for a photo opportunity. We each get to make up our minds about what we take and what we leave home. There is always a chance for theft no matter where we go. If I take my cameras with me and the house is broken into at least those cameras with me will not be stolen.

Let's not forget that wives can help carry things.

Who really cares what someone else does if it does not affect you personally? It's his choice. Did you compare images with him? Perhaps his gear allowed him to do something you could not do. It really does not matter anyway. I took three cameras, two long lenses, a shorter lens, and a sturdy tripod when I went to Costa Rica and got some very nice images with the gear.

Thank you for a common sense reply. You are my new hero for today. Not one of us is paying for his gear nor carrying it. Noneya is my standard reply for people who question the motives of someone else.

I went to Costra Rica with a 20 lbs camera bag.
I met this guy from another group and he was tooting over 60lbs of gear.
Here was his set up at the hotel.
20lb tripod, gimbal head, focusing rail, camera body, remote trigger. He said that he has to take a couple of days off when he gets home to rest up.

Using a focusing rail on a gimble is rather confusing to me and I don't see the purpose.

The tripod weighs much less than 20 lbs. I have a similar, if not the same tripod and its weight is 4.5 lbs.

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like one of RRS’s carbon fiber tripods, which I know from personal experience weighs nothing close to 20 lbs.

Is there really anything to be accomplished by criticizing what other photographers carry in terms of their gear? If it works for the guy, great. If it doesn’t work for you, carry what you prefer or need instead.

That doesn't look like 60lbs of gear and even if he has another 30lbs in his room ... So What?

I liked the response of countryboy.
Just because he has all that equipt doesn’t mean he is crazy. It helps, but isn’t definitive.
If the guy is serious about his photography and misses the picture of a lifetime he wasted a lot of money on the trip! To each, his or her, own. That is, of course, he missed the great photo op because of the one lens or piece of equipment he left at home at the last minute, thinking it was too heavy and he probably wouldn’t need it!

Well, after toting 60 pounds of photo equipment he couldn't hold whatever camera he used to take that that picture.

I'll bet he at least gets his photos in focus, but the photo of his camera isn't.

???? I thought it was a photo of the lower part of a tree trunk and the tripod was just foreground stuff. I mean odd composition but the bark looks awesome!

The closest most photographers will ever get to success is to stand there admiring someone else's superior equipment.

I loved all of his gear. I would love to have his setup; however I would have a problem moving it from one place to another. Ilove stuff.
I took two camera bodies and didn't have to use one. It was a backup in case something happen to my Mark 4. If my camera failed it would have been the end of my trip. I would have to stay in my room and cry all day long

Or ... you could have bought another new camera on your trip!

Remember. It is not so much about the gear. It is about the skill and talent of the artist

I came back from Barcelona Spain a short while ago. I really didn't have much gear. In part, I was afraid I might leave something behind. I had my full frame body and a short zoom lens. I had a long zoom lens. I had a wide angle and a tilt shift lens. I had a tripod. I didn't have filters, ball heads and flashes or reflectors.
