Why put the whole of the couple and the whole of the bicycle in the frame when half of each tells the story.

I agree totally. Following convention is only for the conventional.
I am in awe (and speechless)
...what everyone said, especially photophile's comment on your choice of DOF. I like your R / L crop at the lager and the saddle.
What a great shot. My face is now green.

Nice contrasty black and white. Excellent Lesson that follows on well from last nights club session on how to break rules and still be successful.

Hello John, don't break the rules because you think that rules are not for you, don't break them through laziness. Break them with purpose in mind.

Our lecturer / tutor (Damon Guy - also a club member) was trying to get us to do just this and your image is a wonderful addition to his lecture. Showing the full bicycle and bodies would add nothing to the picture and take away some of the detail. Long story, but never got to the woods by the way.
I see he has a beer can in his hand. I hope they are resting and not past out.
B/W makes it unusual.
This is superb. Besides the fact that there are so many stories possible here, the image itself is very well done. Just the right amount of contrast.
Classic great photograph. Since the seat/saddle is not necessary, following your statement (don't need the whole bicycle to get the idea) nor compositionally, I looked for your reasoning. My mind (I blame it) came up with the phallic nature of the seat/saddle going with the "feminine" nature of the basket as some metaphor for the relationship of the two people.
