I tend to chuckle a bit when I see people so worked up over the cost of a lens. Those who can afford it and or justify it will get it if they want. Heck, there is a lot of money out in the world. I know people who spend tens of thousands of dollars drag racing for a long weekend. And it’s mostly for the experience...

I suspect a lot (not all) of those who are financially able to purchase this lens are doing so as an investment.

I do available light photography in low light situations and would love to have a lens like this, albeit for less money.

My suspicion is that a ton of these will go to folks doing surveillance...

Apparently demand exceeds production capabilities.

"NIKKOR Z 58mm f / 0.95 S Noct" started accepting orders on October 12, but it is expected that it will take a considerable amount of time to deliver the product because we received many orders exceeding expectations. ..." Google translation

They didn't say that they were cancelling existing orders, so maybe we will see some hands on results from actual owners next month.

I started saving up for one and already have $2.37 in the piggy bank.

I don't believe it...an $8000 manual focus lens...just what we all want to buy. Why not just ramp up production and continue to accept preorders. What business model are they using?

I expect an announcement down the road saying the lens discontinued. Nikon has done this before.

If it's so easy to just ramp up production, people wouldn't be waiting for months now for the 500mm PF lens.

Ramping up production on precision lenses isn't as easy as speeding up an assembly line. You don't call the local unemployment office or temp service and say send me a few people to polish some glass and assemble some lenses. There are lenses in production now that must go back to Japan if they need repair. The folks in Melville aren't even allowed to open them. Add to that the fact that there is at least one other lens they can't keep up with demand ... the 500mm pf. Does that mean you expect an announcement about them being discontinued?

I would think long focal length and high iso body would be more useful for surveillance...

Obviously people here have no clue about the needs of professional photographers. This lens has 17 elements and is designed for absolutely uncompromising quality at a very high aperture. The Leica Noctilux 50mm f0.95 sells for $12,000, and this lens is both longer in focal length and promises to be better. A bargain, really, in a photographic world far beyond that of amateurs.

You can be sure that there will be people buying Z bodies simply to be able to use this lens.

I wouldn't pay a penny more than $3450 for a lens with a mere 17 elements ...

As tempting as it is, I'm saving and holding out for a 60mm f.065. Figure that Nikon won't start work on that until most of the f.95 orders are filled so lots of time to save. ; )
