I have the Sony Pro version - it is not easy to learn, but if you have a Sony a series camera it seems to be the way to go. I use Luminar as well and if I remember right there was a pop-up that advised Capture 1 does the best job in handling Raw. They do have periodic webinars which are really informative. They are available at the Capture 1 site.

IMO Capture One is the best raw converter for Sony files. I only ever use sessions.

Does it offer focus stacking?

From the discussion, I see there are many of you that like C1 for processing RAW files, but I find the navigation within C1 to be very confusing. Probably my problem, but I am used to accessing my photo files by going to my existing folder structure in Windows. Do you have to import into the C1 catalog in order to process the photos in C1?

You may already know this but one of the benefits of Sessions is that the whole session directory can be copied to another computer so the editing effort can be worked on there or archived as a unit. You can even rename the directory.

All you need to do to open the session again is to double-click the db file name in the base folder which has the original session name such as "2019-10 Old Cars.cosessiondb"

Yea, really like Sessions. Nice icon for the cosessiondb. Individual Capture, Output, Selects, Trash folders. Trash saved my ass one time.
Don't need catalog just use my own. Using the individual session folders, with full size import files, all stored together in one place easy to find and use. Don't need the original photo folder unless I want to add images.
Hey, thanks for the Fuji charts the other day.

The Sony version is full feature except that it does not do "Sessions". The extra cost Sony version will do that. If you don't care about Sessions it is the bargain of the century. Unless they have changed it, the basic version is at no charge for Sony cameras.

Correct, the basic Sony version is at no cost to registered Sony camera owners.

No. You can open and name a new session every time you use C1. Simply import your new raw files into this new session folder. After you've finished the conversion you can remove the files to any other location. Raw files are in the capture folder and tiff files are in the output folder. Personally I prefer to reuse the same session folder over and over again.

Go to the Library Tool. Upper left edge, folder icon next to camera icon just below arrow. Open.
Open System Folders and your whole computer is accessible. Find and pick an image.
Can also drag and drop.
You do not need to import.

Since nobody has answered my question about focus stacking using this software I’ll assume it doesn’t offer it.

Thank you for responding. If I use C1, I will use it in that manner.

Thank you for responding, but my C1 Express for Sony does not work the way you suggested. I can open a folder, my whole computer is accessible, but the images do not display. I cannot chose an image unless I import the folder into the catalog. Maybe I have a setting wrong in C1, but I've spent quite a bit of time on this with no success.

Express does not have Sessions. It’s worth paying for.

Y’all are making want to buy the Pro version for Sony now! Thanks for all the responses!

Download the Express version first. It will open with a full Pro version (for Sony) for a limited time, then it will revert to the Express version. All the support material is geared towards the Pro version, so if you come across a feature that is disabled when using Express, it's likely because it isn't part of Express - that's how they get you to upgrade. I don't mind, it's great software and not terribly expensive.
