Hey all! I’m considering purchasing this software for my Sony cameras (around a 100 bucks.) I currently use Lightroom 6 and am looking for comparisons. I know Gene uses this software for his Sony’s. Anyone else? I’m only interested in the Sony version. Thanks

The Sony version is full feature except that it does not do "Sessions". The extra cost Sony version will do that. If you don't care about Sessions it is the bargain of the century. Unless they have changed it, the basic version is at no charge for Sony cameras.

Start with the free express version by all means but the Pro version offers considerably more functionality and is certainly worth consideration -- excellent raw processing software.

I've got the free version and I'm not fond of it, but mainly because of the way you have to import your photos into a catalog to edit them. I think the paid version has something called "Sessions" so that you can edit one or a small number of photos without using the catalog so it would probably work for me but since I have learned to use Luminar Flex (and I like it) I don't want to pay the price for Capture One Pro.

The Sessions, when used to edit a file already on your computer's storage, will import the contents of the entire folder in which that file is stored.

I make this work for me by using a folder with a small number of files. I don't use catalogs. But you could use small catalogs, I think. I don't think it is restricted to just one catalog.

You could probably use the free version the same way.

There is not much else to distinguish the free version from the paid version (Sony).

I believe the express version has the same raw processing as the Pro version.

I think it has less features than the Pro version -- same raw engine but with less control in processing.

You can edited photos without importing to catalogs, just use the Library or drag and drop. It will pick up whole the folder individual file is in and create 'previews'. Save to catalog if you wish.
Sessions will make a separate copy of file(s) you select.

It does not make a copy of the original raw file. It does save metadata.

I just read the help manual and that's what it says.
Seems I have been doing something different somehow. I have individual session folders on my computer which have a sub folder 'Capture' which has actual copies. Just deleted the original photo folder of one and they still open up in capture one. 'Capture' folder bigger than original. Takes up more hard drive space but ??
Can't investigate more right now

The free version offers a trial of the Pro version. Once the trial is over, there are quite a few processes and features that stop working. I got so frustrated after using the trial for a while that I gave Phase One my credit card and ordered the Pro version. It was totally worth it. I still use Lightroom for importing and managing my images, and just use C1 to do the raw editing on my Sony images, but only after they are in the LR catalog.

I'm not completely sure we are debating the same thing. However, when I start a session it creates a CaptureOne folder with some subfolders. I just looked at one and it's about 60MB. There are many more pictures in that session than 2 or 3 and yet all my raw shots are at least 20MB and some are 24MB. Conclusion: it's metadata only.

If you use Sessions as it was originally intended - as a tethered device while doing actual studio shooting, then it will probably be different for the obvious reason. Perhaps that is where the "Capture" folder would be. I don't have one.

Screenshot of Finder attached to aid in understanding my explanation. Left side is "info".

It's possible that there is confusion being generated by the method of importation. Translation: I always put the picture files on the hard disk using my file manager and only then import what I want to work on. It does import the entire folder in which the target file resides, but I usually limit the content of that folder (cull first).

I hope this helps clear it up.

I have Lightroom, On1, Nik and Luminar but after evaluating and comparing all of them I have decided to make Capture One 12 as my main database and photo editor. Of course, I still sometimes use Luminar or Nik as plug-ins. What I like about C1 is it is fast, you can create layers very easily, and its color manipulation is excellent and easy to use. The latest version has what they call Luma which can separate the light background from the dark or vice versa and then you can make layers or mask from that separation. There is always a steep learning curve with any editor and that it just makes sense to go through that, unfortunately.
I use a catalog with C1 as it just makes it easier to find photos if you have it in one database. But you can also use what they call "sessions" where you can just edit on the fly without creating a database. And you can certainly use both at the same time if you wish by importing what you have done on sessions to your catalog.
So if you happen to decide in favor of C1 go for the Capture One Pro or Capture One Pro for Sony. The Sony version will only allow you to manipulate Sony photos but it has everything that the Pro has. If you want to have the flexibility of working on other cameras then go for the Pro which is more expensive. What you can do is buy the Sony version first and if you think that you need the Pro in the future then just upgrade. You will get a little discount that way.
